FWIW....
"redneck" origanally was from the south, the "good 'ole boy", usually had a custom-tailered sheet 'an hood in the closet.
I think (IMHO) nowdays, it refers to someone that's on the wild side, usually powered by Budweiser, not paying much attention to rules or laws.
Redneck actually refers to someone who during the Depression was a field worker. Because they spent most of their time stooped over the back of their neck would get extremely sun burnt. It was actually somewhat of an endearing term because it typically meant that you had a job and where able to provide for your family. Only after the 60's did it become synonymous with uneducated/unsophisticated. During the 60's it usually referred to someone who was fond of the old ways and resisted change and thus was not 'hip' so popular culture has taken that to mean anyone who is not what they deem to be 'progressive'.
It somewhat sad to see a word that originated as a complement to become something of an insult but alas that is the world that we live in today.

Want to be considered a redneck???? Not sure what definition you have attatched to it, but here are a few I found:

red·neck
n. Offensive Slang
Used as a disparaging term for a member of the white rural laboring class, especially in the southern United States.
A white person regarded as having a provincial, conservative, often bigoted attitude.

Main Entry: red·neck
Pronunciation: 'red-"nek
Function: noun
1 sometimes disparaging : a white member of the Southern rural laboring class
2 often disparaging : a person whose behavior and opinions are similar to those attributed to rednecks

I don't get why people out West here think they are rednecks? Jeff Foxworthy?

I'm thinking version #2 of the above definition. I'm sure Jeff Foxworthy has some influence also. Perceived synonym = "trailer trash"?

The term "redneck" always reminds me of the dukes of hazzard. So in that sense yeah I'm a redneck. But I'm not according to some of the definitions already posted.

It's all in how you look at it. I don't mind the term.

redneck

I would rather be a redneck than alot of other things......

I see it as someone who is not trying to be some one they are not, or someone who is happy with who they are.

I spent some years trying to be someone else, and was miserable.
I thought I had to be what others were being. where the same clothes, do the same things......now................no more..................

I may be redneck, but i am not in debt, I love getting greasy in the garage, working on the ramcharger, love going Crawling, and my family has never been happier.......

Redneck???????? you best yer ASS!!! now lets go find some rocks!!!!!!
