I am trying to put a TBI unit from a 91 onto my 78 engine. Any advice would really be appreciated. I pulled all wiring, computer, intake, distributer, etc from donor motor. I didn't just swap motor because it was all messed up. I also was wondering, my intake has a few bolts that are a different angle than some on the new intake how do I fix that problem. Should I use an adapter plate or should I try to grind something. I am pretty inexperienced. any advice. also it is in my cj not a chevy truck. thanks. is there anyone out there who could do it for cheap. or trade.

Yep buy the harness....esspecially if you have not played with the comp/injection stuff before....
It is not worth the time and effort to try to retrofit the harness!!

I would highly reccomend Howell for this stuff. Their harness is very easy to install, they can provide all the sensor and/or part numbers to work with the combo of your motor and the TBI. they will also have the adapter plate for the TB itself....

The harness you have can work, but if you are not sure you can do it.... It will cost you way more to have someone make that work, then to buy the harness an do it yourself!!!!

I have done it both ways....I will not do it without a aftermarket harness anymore....not worth the wasted time....

No need for an adapter plate use the TBI intake manifold and spend a few minutes with a die or round file to make the holes work with the bolt angle of the old heads.

I am ordering a harness from AFI anyone dealt with them before. They are making me a new chip for my computer also so I don't have to mess with the emissions stuff. What do you think?

I have dealt with them. No problems so far.
I had them do a harness and reprogram my prom.

What's the damage? ($$$) I think I might try and 'hack' up my TBI harness, but it might be worth it just to buy something that will work and not have to figure everything out.

The harness is 225 and the chip is 95 not too bad compared to painless. They will guarentee the chip also and reprogram it if I do any upgrades.

IT IS worth the price....I did hack thing before you could buy reasonable harnesses. It is a PIA. I would not do it again.
On the other hand, if you are sick and twisted and enjoy the satisfaction of doing it yourself....it is not that difficult. Just time consuming and frustrating!!!! BUT, get a good book or service manual, B&N has a few, and lay it all out on a sheet of plywood w/nails to mock up the lay out....

Then again, just buy the harnes and drive it by the end of the weekend!!

Does anyone have a link to this particular company? It is not familar to me.

I know of a guy that will use your harness and just do what it needs to make it work. He did my buddies 72 Nova for about 200 or so. I might not be exact on the price.

Does that mean use my harness now or the one i would buy from AFI? 200 seems like a pretty good price. did he do the plumbing? thanks for the help.

Anyone -- what is the best fuel pump to buy. and do i need to use hard line or can it be rubber line. Also do i need a regulator or does the TB have a built in one. Thanks.

The TBI has a regulator built into it, but you will need to get a pump with the right output so it doesn't overwhelm it. Can't help you on which one or where to get it. You could run soft lines but I wouldn't run them underneath if I were you. That's just asking for trouble. Hard lines to the back of the engine and soft lines to the TBI if it were me. Hard lines suck getting them on and off at the TBI.

That is a good point about the soft and hard lines. So, if the TBI needs 13-15 psi if I find one in that range then I should be okay right.

Well.....It's not that you need to get one with the exact pressure that the TBI needs (that is what the regulator is for) you just don't want to get one that can pump say 50 PSI and some ungodly volume of fluid. You could end up pumping more gas than the regulator can effectively dump, or more than the gas lines can handle. If I remember right the GM pumps would put out about 20-25 PSI if you pinched off the return lines (it has been a while though) which is about right given that you want to have some excess pressure so the regulator can do its job correctly. I'm sure if you google GM TBI fuel pump you'll come up with thousands of hits.
