37's on a JK

So, with the new 4 door wranglers, we would probably all agree that 35's look like 31's. My dad just ordered a 4 door Rubicon, and is planning on just doing 3-4" of lift and 35's. For those of you out there with 4 doors, is he going to drag his belly too much with 35's? And are those stock 44's going to be able to handle 37's?

My father in law runs a 3 inch lift on his, and 35's. There is just a tiny bit of rubbing on the sliders with the back tire. We didn't seem to have a problem on anything. It was really stable...

I'm going with 37's and a TeraFlex 4" LA kit on mine. It will have 44's front and rear that have been upgraded insided and out.

I think he is leaning more towards the idea of the 35's. On his TJ he only had 33's, and that damned t-case skid would get hung up on everything. I just don't want to have to drag him off everything again, and was wondering if 35's on the JK with the longer wheel base will be the same situation.

I figured on probably needing alloy shafts if it gets 37's. What are you upgrading on the outside of the axles?

Going to be doing lots of upgrades to my front axle first. Going to run Superior gears (5:13) and upgraded shafts.

Remember the JK D44s are a lot stronger than the old D44s (one magazine called them a D45). Your dad should be fine with the 37"s if he is nice to it. Of course you will want to regear.

Whats the difference?

Different gears (don't know if they're stronger or not, but different..), and Rubi axles are 32 spline in the rear.

I dont think the new 44's are any stronger I've talked to jeep techs and they say that they have had to replace a lot of front axle shaft on the new jeeps.

Front and rear axleshafts are common to replace. Superior makes chromo replacements for both ends if you want the peace of mind.

From one of the mags:

"Major internal changes are extremely important and are buried in the axles. The Wrangler X and Sahara get a Dana 30 front and a Dana 35 rear, and the optional towing package nets you a rear Dana 44 as well. A Trac-Lok limited slip is optional on the 35 and 44, with 3.21 and 4.10 gear ratios available. The 35 is now a non-C-clip captive bearing style, with stronger shafts, strengthened tubes, and bigger pinion bearings and pinion. The front 30 has bigger pinion and pinion bearings and bigger axle joints and stub shafts, and also features a captive unit bearing so the stub axle can be removed if needed. And since bigger is better, the Rubicon's 44 front is now a reverse-pinion design, has stronger tubes, a bigger pinion shaft and bearings, bigger 1350 series U-joints, better axles, and a captive unit bearing. The Rubicon's rear 44 features bigger pinion bearings and pinion, a larger (yes, larger) ring gear by 10 mm, bigger tubes, and (gasp) 32-spline 1.4-inch-diameter special axleshafts. That stuff will keep the aftermarket busy for a while, and, oh yeah, the completely new-style lockers front and rear are now engaged magnetically, instead of vacuum operated. Less is better in this case. Did we mention the drain plugs? Find that in another vehicle...."

I read a mag over the weekend that showed the axle shafts and ring & pinions side by side from the TJ Rubi and JK Rubi, and the new JK's are definitely bigger in every category. Not by much in the axle shaft area, but noticeably on the r&p. Still probably going to stick with 35's though after looking at everything.
