39 inch irok questions

Yes, 1.6 with a sidekick reduction box (1.8:1) and a 4.7 toyota case with 5.29 diffs. Not a lot of power, no. I have to do everything in 1st gear unless I can get a run at it in 2nd. My problem is that the stock sidekick automatic that I'm running has a huge gap between 1st and 2nd gear. It feels like a shift to third when it goes into 2nd. I can't get out of the big hot tub because of that.

Here's my philosophy, though. I built it to be a lightweight crawler with lots of gear reduction, and I love it. It doesn't have much power, but it crawls anything crawlable and I wouldn't run any tire less than a 39. Yes, you may not make it out of the big hot tub with 39s, but I think that the benefits of 39s will outweigh the costs on your rig.

Im running 39.5's x 16 Iroks, I like them, Im running ave 8 lbs of air with beadlocks and have not lost a bead in two seasons, but they do wear fast on the pavement. they dont grip as well as stickies, but good enough for me and my budget.

so out of the iroks its just the 39 that sucks?

I've yet to see them (any size) work as well as their predecessors. Just my personal, on-trail observations. They don't seem to have a "thing".

Durability - average
quiet - um, nope
traction - average
cost - better side of average, maybe that's their thing?

They don't seem to be a "bad" tire, but Interco didn't seem to make anything better from the older models, in my opinion. (I've not run them) They don't seem quite as durable as a TSL or definitely not a TSL/SX. I believe you'd get similar trail results with a more street oriented tire (Toyo, Goodyear, etc.) and be more comfortable on the street or in a dual purpose situation.

IMHO, the best off-road tire would have Maxxis in the sidewall. That's the best one I've seen in my varied off-road experience. I've seen the red-label BFGs do some pretty funky things as well, but have also seen a few sidewall cuts/damage in those compared to the Maxxis. I've seriously considered a set of blue label Krawlers more than once.

Yeah krawlers hook up a lot bettet but they cost a lot more too. Maybe its worth saving up idk

Here's how I look at it. Let's say the Iroks cost $300 per. The Krawlers, or whatever you decide will work, cost $350 per.

To me it's worth saving up $200 more to get the better performing item than "settle" for a cheaper item. Maybe that's why I have a "Jeep" vs. a Zuk, though? :D :p The Maxxis Creepy's made my Jeep seem to WORK, incredibly well. The Kevlar MT/Rs I have on aren't even in that league and my Jeep doesn't work quite as well now.

I've never been a big BFG fan for whatever reason, but have seen the reds do some pretty awesome things. For my money, I'd take the better durability of the Maxxis (at least from what I've seen) over the BFG unless you got a screaming deal on a set.

For my money, and if I was going to stick with an Interco tire, I'd go with a TSL/SX over the IROK.

Just a for instance. Please feel free to adjust pricing to realistic levels and make your own logical conclusions. Just trying to illustrate my point.

I have consistently observed the IROKS bringing suck to a whole new level. As mentioned earlier, they dont seem to do anything well. Dont get any traction on slickrock, chunk like mad in big rocks, lose beads even when used with beadlocks, wear out quickly, and lasty the 39s just look stupid. Interco has positioned the IROK as the thornbirds retarded cousin.

There are other affordable options out there besides IROKs.

Here's one:
39.5X13.50X15C IROK $322.70 (nationaltireandwheel)

39.5x16.5-15 Pitbull rocker $331.99 (4x4groupbuy)
The choice there is pretty clear there;)

Now, if the OP steps up to a 17" wheel he will have far more tires to choose from in the 40" flavor.

These seem to be getting some good feedback for 40s on the cheap.
