I have had good luck with my Dewalt..its the HD 4.5" one...I have heard the Milwaukees are pretty good BUT I used my Bro-in-laws and burnt it up the first night I had it (it was brand new, I was the first to use it)...I have been hearing good things about the Hitachi power tools but I still dont think I could trust a name like Hitachi just yet:D

I've had my Hitachi for about 6 years or so now--it refuses to die, a real workhorse. A while ago the switch finally quit working, but it quit in the "on" position, so now I just plug it in and go.

It's heavier than newer grinders, and not as powerful anymore as it used to me. Von's got a Makita that's nice and light, fast and strong, and is just generally better than my Hitachi--but it's also several years newer.

I looked at the DeWalt ones last time I was buying, and liked most of what I saw--except for the "paddle" switch. I use it in enough weird positions that I don't want to have to hold a switch on all the time. (different models might have different switches though)

That is one of the thing I like about the dewalt, I can feather the switch to get the most accurate grind ;)

Do you mean it is variable speed?
No, it's not just locked on. So you can apply speed as you need it,,, on and off so to speak. When you are done you can instantly let go...

Go Dewalt,

You won't regret it.

They have lock-on buttons at the base of the paddle.

Huh...go figure. Guess I shoulda looked closer at the time, cuz I think the DW was significantly cheaper than my Hitachi.

I use a Makita and it's worked fine for the limited use it's seen :(

This week only at harbor freight you can pick up the 4.5" grinders for $17! I picked one up so I don't have to change wheels all the time on my Makita. 3 grinders would be even cooler :D

BTW - If you buy dewalt go EBAY or go home.
I will never buy another sears product at full price. For some odd reason there is always a ton of super cheap and BRAND NEW sears based tools on Ebay.

Quick search...

I've gotten a few lots of craftsman sockets for 25% of what they are in the store.

I have the cheapy one from harbor and it has worked great for five years, so far.

I also have the dewalt and it rocks.

I have the HF one for using to wire wheel stuff and the dewalt for all the rest.

My first one lasted me two years. I think they make one quality one for every 5 thousand crappy ones.
