yep check the vaccum lines going to the axle and make sure they are plugged in and then check and make sure there isn;t any cracks in the lines...

I thought that the Cherokee's don't use the center disconnect axle. I thought that was a YJ thing.

Try this. Jack up the tire on the disco side, (front pass), put the transfercase in 4wd. Rotate the tire, if it won't rotate, you're good to go. If it does rotate, and the driveshaft doesn't, your disco (the vaccuum thing) needs attention. If the tire rotates and the driveshaft does too, your tcase isn't engaging.

Did you figure it out yet? If you have a vacume actuated T-case like mine, the hoses could have pulled off the actuator. I had a problem once when the hoses melted on my exhaust. I had to repair them before it would go into four.

Would you not get the lower gears when you put it into 4low with the vacuum problem? Hopin its just the dang vacuums, drop way to much money into this piece of ****

yes you will still get the lower gears if the front axle doesn;t engage...the lowers gears are strictly in the T-case...kinda like having a 2wd-low...

If the T-case wasn't shifting into four then you wouldn't get the low gears, you couldn't pull the lever. That's if you had the vacume actuated T-case like mine with a vacume switch for four and a lever for high, low, and neutral. You couldn't switch out of high if you weren't in four. That's how we know it's your axle, not your T-case. I think it's the same for the 231 isn't it, you couldn't get the low gearing if the T-case wasn't in four? Anyway, check it out and let us know what it's doing.

Oh yeah, just though of this. It's not uncommon for the vacume hoses to pull off of the axle after the vehicle has been lifted. It's happened to me before a number of times.
