Catherine & I met up with Chris & Tara again for another trip above Silverton. After meeting up in Silverton, then finding a place to unload our camping gear, we were on our way!

This time we headed up thru Eureka, towards Animas Forks, over the pass in the direction of Ouray and onto our destination... Poughkeepsie Gulch. As we climbed above Animas Pass, the storm clouds rolled in and the lightning & thunder began. We found some refuge from the rain, so Chris pulled out the tarp to cover the wife & kids. ( The Bronco looks good in blue, guys! :p )

The trail up to Poughkeepsie Gulch is one of the harder trails in the area, namely for one spot called The Wall. We pulled in & assesed the challenge ahead.

As we pulled into the area just below The Wall, we saw an S10 Blazer that was leaning to one side. Nobody was around, so we walked over to see what happened. Apparently he was a bit too throttle friendly... broken shaft. Just as we saw the shaft, a XJ came up the trail with the owner of the broken S10. They were going to start the search for another shaft the following day.

With the addition of the rain, the Wall was definatley a challenge. It felt like what I'd imagine East Coast wheelin to be... 2nd gear, some momentum and full throttle was how I finally made it up... and I went the easy way!

Chris struggeld at first, but after finding the right line he walked right up. Being the hardcore guy he is, Chris turned around and went back down, to try the hardest line on The Wall. :freak:

More if Chris messing playing around... sadly as close as he came, some issues with the front locker prevented him from making it out the top. He was so close at times... :-\

Just above The Wall we came to Lake Como, which had a beautiful turquoise color. We stopped to enjoy the (cold) scenery and take it all in.

We made our way back down, thru the small mining town of Gladstone & back to our campsite just above Silverton. We started the campfire and the grill and prepared for dinner. After dinner we all shared a great dessert of Peach Cobbler from the Dutch Oven, prepared by Catherine. With out stomaches full, we went into town to watch the fireworks display that Silverton puts on each year. It was an amazing show which lasted about 45 minutes. I thought the best part was hearing the fireworks echo off the surrounding mountains.

With the show over we went our seperate ways. Chris, Tara & the kids headed back home while Catherine & I went back to our camp... we were so wiped out, it took little time for us to clear the back of the 4Runner to make room for the sleeping bag.

The next morning we ate a great breakfast, fire cooked with the dutch oven! Scrambled eggs, bacon and we even managed some biscuts! It was one of the best camping meals I've had in awhile. :D

After breakfast, we decided to take the leisurely drive back home... from Silverton, over the Alpine Loop to Ouray, then back on the pavement for the remaining 2 hrs. There was a mining area we saw the day before that I wanted to check out & Catherine wanted to get some pics of the rocky mountain wild flowers.

Some of the wild flowers, they were all over the place. It's really neat to see them spread out all over the mountain, they must be amazing plants to grow in the places they do.

The ones that are purple & white are Columbines, the Colorado state flower. Very cool looking.

Wow, what a cool trip. You always write up the best trip reports. Thanks for the pictures, I would like to go over there sometime.

This is the type of stuff I moved here for, there's so much to see out here. I really like the trip reports forum, I think it's one of the best parts of RME.

Come on over, stay for a few days & check out scenery... you'll be amazed.

Holy crap we look ghetto!!! I can't really complain though since I was dry and warm whilst looking ghetto!

It was such a great trip, rain and all, we had a blast! I think next year we need to find a campsite where we can watch the fireworks instead of having to pull ourselves away from the campfire... and the yummy peach cobbler. Kudos to Catherine for that!! And we will definitely be spending the night next time. It was a LONG drive home. Worth it!:D

Damn that electrac! Would this be a good time to mention how much I think those things suck???? On a positive note though, it's now sitting on the garage floor and the spool should be installed by tonight. :D

Thanks for the pics Greg!

You'll definatley have fun Kurt. This area is like AFC, but on a scale 1000x larger. And knowing how much you like AFC... ;)

One thing I'd suggest is to bring rain gear, a jacket & a pair of pants. It was cold, but could have been even colder. Chris & Tara say that it's usually rainy in the high elevations during the summer months... I was wearing my jacket towards the top of Poughkeepsie, on July 4th!!

I think there are more that have had a custom Tarp Top than care to admit. ;)

I was wondering if we could find a spot like that! We're game for July 4th, '07 in Silverton! You guys missed the best part by leaving in the evening... the next day during breakfast we cooked a few of the biscuts in the bacon grease... mmmmmmmm... bacon.... . Talk about a heart-attack waiting to happen! But they were so yummy!

Wohoo!! Congrats, that'll be nice to have a front-end that doesn't unlock right when you need it.
