I've been out on the south side quite a bit on my bike. (No clue where your arrows are pointing) There's some 2-track, but the two track there is, is just easy dirt roads. There is a little single track that's fun for the occasional ride on a bike. In a 4wd, I don;t see any reason to go to the south side. There is also private property on the south side you need to be aware of if you are riding on that side.

There aren't any technical routes open on the south side, but there's plenty of reason to explore the area. Some mines, plenty of dirt roads, and lots to explore. Staying on designated routes will keep you clear of the private property in the area, and you can pass through the area to reach several cool destinations.

Get a good map like the Utah recreation atlas and go exploring. :)

Staying on the designated routes won't keep you clear of the private property. Jordan Livestock has lots of property out there and without permission, the owner does not want people on his property. He's had lots of problems with vandals tearing up his fencing, signs, watering troughs, and retaining ponds. All I'm saying is know before you go :p Just assuming because you are on a designated route, that you are OK is not true at all.

Are we talking about a designated route or an existing route? The BLM doesn't 'designate' a route on private property unless they have established a ROW or easement and they are willing to defend that right-of-way. Many exist in the 5MP area, can't speak for that particular property because I don't know where its at but the BLM lands can be found here:
http://www.blm.gov/pgdata/etc/media.../ohv.Par.0009.File.dat/Fivemile_Pass_2007.pdf

BLM land shown in yellow shade, designated routes shown in red, existing route designations and open cross-country designations shown as well. The blue is SITLA which generally accepts the land designations of the surrounding land.

Your are absolutely right that users should investigate this stuff ahead of time particularly when private property issues come into play.

I guess I'm not up on terminology :D Existing routes vs. designated routes ;)

Looking at that map, the private property I'm referring to is quite a bit farther south than that map shows. Maybe it's not technically 5 Mile Pass. :)

Its a sticky subject no doubt, particularly in the 5MP area. Combine private property, old route inventories, high concentration of users and a ginormous web of inter-tangled routes. No doubt that entire area will be limited to 'designated' routes if/when the RMP ever comes to fruition. Given the lack of budget for a new RMP and the current lawsuits taking place on the recent RMP's, the BLM isn't even progressing on the RMP for the Salt Lake Field Office. Our best bet is just to be ready to help the BLM with the RMP process when they are ready.

I have ridden atv's and my dirtbike a ton on the south side of the highway, on the smaller toys the south side is the only reason why I would go to 5 mile pass. The north side (the area that is not posted "no trespassing" anyways) isn't even that fun to me and if it weren't for the south side of the road I wouldn't even bother going to 5mp with an atv or dirtbike.

However for jeeps and rock-crawlers it wouldn't be that fun, unless the vehicle was stock so the trail had the possibility of posing a technical challenge.

It's hard to tell by that map. Where that red arrow is the road loops back around at the bottom. The hill where the arrow is pointing is optional (up and over to the backside of the hill). I agree there is alot of tracks out there that get kind of confusing.

The few times I've been out I haven't seen any signs. I know better than to trespass.

Now you know. That's why they're called designated routes.

There's a lot more to getting out than "technical challenge".

If you want to break stuff, spin tires, and use your winch, stick with Rattlesnake/WW/Constrictor. If you're interested in exploring, mining history, and being outside, there's nothing wrong with a dirt road.

That's just my opinion. There's nothing wrong with breaking stuff, spinning tires and using your winch. :)

So looking at the BLM maps, is it a correct assumption that what is south of the highway, within the 5MP recreation area, is BLM land and open for cross country travel?

Tan shading shows BLM
Blue slashes show OPEN

The light blue hatching yes, the green now. So a small portion of the land south (mostly southwest of 5MP proper) is open to cross-country, the area from Thorpe hills and south is designated only.

There are some cool trails south west, of the main 5MP parking lot. About a 1000ft south of the highway. I had this in my head it was open.

So yesterday I was out following some old, but existing trails on the hillside, when I had some ATV riders call in the plates that we were off the trail.

This area is clearly in the blue hatching.

So did a ranger or sheriff come out? Do you have a GPS coord of where you were?

The open area for the most part is the flat areas. As soon as you get in the hills/mountains on that south side your most likely bordering or well within the designated area. For example the old Charlies Trail is in a designated area and is/was closed to travel.
