6.7 Cummins ECM Fried

Was in Moab for the second half of EJS. Towing through town and my 2007.5 Dodge 3500 with the 6.7 Cummins sputtered and died. Couldn’t get it to even try to start afterwards.

Plugged in my Smarty tuner to see if I could pull a code and it couldn’t connect to the truck. I also tried the “key on key off” code pull and all it did was say “done”. These lead me to believe the ECM is a goner. Had it towed to a local diesel shop in Moab where it’s sitting in line for work. A quick call to the dealership, they quoted $3k (reman) or $5k (new) for an ECM.

Assuming this ends up being the culprit, I’m going to have a hefty repair bill, which will likely kill my upcoming Sand Hollow trip and any other wheeling trips this year aside from local stuff.

My questions are:
Are there other reputable vendors for a quality replacement ECM? I see a lot of eBay options, but I’m pretty leary of them.

I also want to know what causes an ECM to just up and die? Am I going to spend several thousand dollars on a new ECM only to fry it again?

Man bummer sorry to hear. Sorry I’m not much help but I had an 02 Dodge/Cummins that started to eat ecms when I lived in Florida a few years back.

3k and 5k seems really high to me but maybe things have changed. I could not get an oem ecm for mine (discontinued) so I rolled the dice with a refurbished one. First one I received fixed the problem but it experienced other completely unrelated issues so I returned it under warranty. Second one worked great until it fried in the same way the original one did.

I never got to the bottom of it. I P-pumped the truck. In my mind electronics either work or they don’t. I’d go refurbished and install yourself. Unless the 6.7 is different they’re just mounted on the side of the block on the driver side.

Even my fried ecm was worth a fair amount on eBay so don’t throw yours out.

You can find used ECM's on car-part.com for $1500-2000. You'll probably need to have it flashed for your truck by the dealer.

I did this on a diesel Jetta, bought ECM from LKQ in AZ, had it flashed at my local dealer and had no issues.

We had a master battery switch's on our work trucks(around the same year as yours) and if you flipped it off while the truck was running it would kill the ECM.
