okay i layed the wheel face down on the floor. i broke a yardstick so it would sit on the wheel, not the tire. and then i measured from the mounting surface to the stick and it is roughly 4". so that means what?
i flipped it over and did the same thing and got 7". these are wide @ss wheels, and i didn't even realize it. they are 14" tires, i don't think i need like 11" wheels for that.
let me know what is up, i'll work on posting the pics. it'll take a sec.

okay, that is 4 inch BS, I beleive, pretty standard actually. the total width you came up with (11) isn't quite right. when you measure a wheel for width of tire, you measure inside lip to inside lip which would mean you prolly have a 10 wheel.

okay from the pics I would say you have 4.5" backspacing. what tires are you running? Summit has very good prices on wagonwheels.

tires are a wannabe groundhawg. they are 36.5x14. what size wheels should i get?? i can get a deal on wheels through my company probably. yeah wheels aren't that expensive, but getting them mounted and balanced is a pain. plus i think i should get beadlocks and that is mucho expensive!!!!
any helpful advice???

you will prolly want ten inch rims with that tire, unless you might want beadlocks later, then I would go with an 8 inch rim and do rocklogic weld on locks later. get 2.5 backspacing

thanks,

i am not sure what backspacing is all about. here is an example: is 3" backspacing pushed further out from the jeep or is 2.5" backspacing pushed further out???

sure you are...please! somebody already said that a lot of spacing puts pressure on bearings and balljoints. does that pretty much sum it up?

Decreasing the backspacing, or putting the mounting flange close to the inside lip of the rim will increase the leverage the rim itself exerts of the wheel bearings and shafts. Ideally, you would want to increase the width of the rim while maintaining a proportional backspacing. But clearance will always be an issue with jeeps. So your only recourse is to change the backspacing to fit the tires you want. I run 12.5" wide tire on stock 7" rims. I would prefer an 8" wide rim, but the UHP says it has to stay under my flares. If you don't care or are building a buggy, take your rim width, in your case 14.5" and divide by 1.5 You get 9.6, but that would be a 10" rim for safety. By no means is that tire/rim law, it is just a guide. I'll end my diatribe. Best of luck finding what you need.
