60 vs 80

. I would run from anything else. Because of local politics certain people here wont bash certain products.

Spurious claim alert! "Bashing" products is ridiculous: discussing relevant issues with products is another story. :D

Hmmmm are you talking about Tera60's? What's wrong with them?

I'm interested to hear that as well. ;) The knuckles-out might not be your pleasure (balljoint and all...) but the centers are great, IMO.

Knuckles are of course, easily dealt with on a custom build. :D

The only thing I don't like about balljoint axles is that it usually means "unit bearing hubs", and frankly, I like the wider bearings and the wider bearing spacing on the kingpin stuff.

I like the Tera centers.

I would like to know the answer to that also. Why do you think a CRD60 is weak????

Go with the 60, the 80 is unnecessarily expensive for what you need.

I just got lucky and have some money now to buy me a new front axle for my TJ Rubicon unlimited. I've narrowed it down to a TeraCRD60, which is what I have in the rear of the jeep. And also a Dynatrac Dana 80. This will be my only chance to buy one so I want to buy the biggest and baddest axle. Going to be running 39 krawlers and another set of 42" Iroks. If you had the chance to buy any front axle you wanted what would it be?????? Not to concerned about the weight either. 60 or 80????

What did you decide to go with?

If you want the biggest and baddest axle and don't care about weight why aren't you looking at a set of unimog axles 406,416,419, UL1300 or U1500?

Parts are expensive but so are high end 60 parts.
Better ground clearance than 60's.
Rated at 3.5 tons.
Portals, geared, air locker, from factory. (Disk brakes too depending on year and type of axle.)

Never understood why people like built 60's when for about the same amount of money they could have a set of mogs.

rarely do mogs last long when they are actually used. I've known a lot of people that had used mogs (competitors) and most, if not all, are back to D60s...that says something.

Yes but the mogs that have been used in comps are the 404 axles which are extremly weak compared to the rest. The part that tends to break is the portal housing which is weak due to the material and its thin wall and lack of reinforcement.

I don't think anyone in comps has used the 406 or the UL1300 variants due to the weight of the axle but I could be wrong.

I think there were a couple that tried the UL1300 and there was atleast one that ran the Volvo variety and again, pretty much everyone has switched back to the Danas (I can't think of anyone that hasn't switched back, but I haven't really followed the comps for the last couple years).

I can think of a few Mog comments.

Friends don't let friends buy Mogs!

Just say NO to Mogs!

60s rule, Mogs drool.

Thats 80 setup is sweet von. As for the mogs I always thought they were badass, but from what I have seen I would only look at the newer u1300 and up newer axles. The shafts are like 1.75 before the portals and the boxes are around twice the size of 404's. I would want an extras set of axles at home just for parts. Plus you usually have to convert the torque tube and brakes etc. So the money adds up quick.

Torque tubes and brakes are BIG money. I remember when that guy up in Ogden... Dan Tibus? (has a badass M715 too) was selling Volvo and Mog axles, they were pretty reasonable... until you got to conversion parts. Then it got real stupid, real fast. :D

The dana 80's look really good.

The mogs parts are expensive but if you go with the 406 and U varients with the factory disk brakes you only have to do the pinion conversions.

Pinion conversions are about $600 each.
If you needed to do disk brakes they are about $900 and axle.

I would really would like to get another pair of 419 or U1300 axles for my zuk again. I shouldn't have ever sold the first set.

For those who have asked, here are the latest of the rear D80 project. I may be able to post pics of the front one by Friday. I'm crossing my fingers... :greg:
