I'm building my first rockcrawler from ground up. I'm using a LT1 with a Atlas 2 and need some advice on using the 700-R4 or 4L60E. I've seen both but want to know what you guy's think as far as A-Z on these trans.
Thanks

they are the same thing...the 4L60E is jsut an electronic controlled version of the 700...better build it up real good though, if you are running a healthy V8 the 700s have been known to self destruct...400 or Powerglide (depending on needs) would be better selections for an LT1...

What about a 4L80 instead?

I don't know SuperGPer...you really gotta hand it to a fairly well built 700/4L60e to pop it. I think the choice is obvious for an LT1, a 4L60E. Choice is simple...you are running a TPI motor, so a 4L60E is a direct bolt in with you harness, pcm, and prom. Have the internals upgraded and corvette servos thrown in it, and you should be good. I think you will have problems runnin a 4L80E on an LT1 pcm...you would probably have to get a seperate trans controller. I honestly don't think the gains are worth the added cost.

Is the Electronic something that I'm going to hate or not be reliable?

Read above...however, the electronic controlled trans won't give you any problems. It will be very reliable for your setup, and will be a direct bolt-in for your PCM.

What can be done about the trans shifting (on its own) at certain rpm's since it's electronic?

Well.....I think the 4L60E will hold 1st (someone correct me if wrong)...you also may be able to alter the valve body like on a th350?? Sorry man, I never dealt with trannies in the dealer...and always ran a manual in my Cj.

And of course you could always go with a transco kit.... http://www.drivetrain.com/transgoshiftkits.html

(from their page)--Stick shift; full manual control, converts back to automatic. Competition, off-road and pro-street, holds 1st, 2nd and 3rd to any rpm. Backshifts to 3rd, 2nd and 1st at any time. For transplat or use with no electrical. Also order 46-MOD.

They also have other kits available.

I was told the reason so many ran 700's was shift control. If gear control is a problem I'll buy a 700 instead of a 4L60 and have the hell built out of it. There can't be any of this stuff of the computer telling it when to shift.

Thats what I needed. Appreciate it Bowski. I'll buy a 4L60E core and have it built and use this program.
Thanks

I agree 100% but like you pointed out if the internals are upgraded and corvette servos...thats the stuff I was refering to when I said upgrading it...I know nothing of the electronic transmissions other than what they have replaced (4L60E-700, 4L80E-400) so what works with what you would surely know best...

I was thinking he was going to be running a stock tranny and was wondering what to get;)

Yeah, depending on how hard you are going to beat on the thing, you can sometimes get away runnin a stocker. But if its going in a buggy then I agree that the essential internals should be upgraded.

You may want to look at bowtieoverdrives.com. I got a stage 2 700r tranny from them last spring.(about $1,400 shipped) I think it was a good choice. They specialize in 700r's. They were real good to work with, and they have a 1 year warrenty starting when its installed and working. I also used a Lokar shifter which I really like also. I am using this with a TBI 350.
I am just telling you what I heard, but I think they corrected many of the weaknesses of the stock setups.
