700R4 to 4L60E conversion

I need a little help from you engine and tranny gurus.
What's involved in exchanging a 700R4 (from a 95 firebird) with a 4L60E in a 80's diesel? I've heard the output shafts are different on the 2wd from the 4wd, I know the 4wd is supposed to be 3" from the rear main casing.
So do you have to buy a new output shaft or can you cut the old one down?
Also, does anyone know what is needed as far as the electronic control goes? I'm guessing you need a computer from the car and a harness. Maybe some other stuff.

are you sure you dont have them mixed up...the 4L60E started in late 80s (aorund 89 or so) and the 700R4 was prior to that...the outputs are different as you stated, I have heard of guys cutting the 2wd down but there are several different style of outputs so you have to make sure you will have enough splines left once you cut the extra shaft off (most wont have enough splines left)...swapping a shaft isn;t that hard to do, especially if you have all the parts you need...when I did my TH350 I tore it down and then I didn;t have my new output shaft so it sat for a week and then I went back to it...I forgot where a few things went but I figured it out...was pretty simple...the 4L60E is totally controlled by computer where the 700 isn;t at all...the only electronic part on the 700 is the converter lock up so you will need to get the plug for that off the donor and figure how to wire that in (I am sure you could buy an aftermarket kit for the converter lock up though)

thats my question too...you wont gain anything other than a head ache or a bigger hole in your pocket trying to make the computer controlled 4L60E to work...

I don't, a friend of mine needs to replace his 700R4 and I can get this one cheap from a guy I just bought an engine from. He'd trade me a snowmobile for it so I'm just checking to see if it'll work. It looksl ike it'd be more work than worth.
Thanks for the help though.

even though the tranny would be free/cheap and would bolt right in I still think it would be more expensive cause you have to buy a seperate computer to control the tranny...I would just look for another 700...FWIW:D
