700R4 to NP241HD Adapter and Clocking ring?

700R4 to NP241 HD adapter?

So what do I need to make this work? Whatever I have in my range rover is not working. Its leaking transmission fluid between the adapter and the transmission and transfercase. I put in all new seals when I installed everything. Any ideas?

I'm a Land Rover guy and don't mess around a lot with Chevy stuff until now.

Thanks

So the tcase filling with oil or is it leaking out somewhere? I'm kinda confused.I just put my 700r and np241 back in the Suburban a couple weeks ago.

Is it the 4 holes on the trans or six on the tcase I've never seen them not line up. Unless they were drilled off. Did you have it clocked or is it stock?

I think clocked it by accident. The 700R4 had an NP205 on it originally. The NP241 bolted up except one hole was off and wouldn't line up. I figured it was fine. It's been fine for months.

What factory adapter (trans to t-case) are you using? Does it have an integral seal? What length input shaft is in your t-case? I checked your build thread and could not find pics that answer these questions...

I used the adapter that was on the transmission. the one for the np205. 4 bolts on one side and 6 on the transfercase side.

Is there a seal inside the adapter? If there is a seal in the adapter, your 241 input shaft must be long enough to engage in that seal. In this scenario, there should be no oil between the adapter and the transfer case. If there is no seal in the adapter itself, you need to seal up your unused hole, and use RTV on the surface between the t-case and the adapter, because it will fill with oil..

So I put new seals in it. I think its leaking out between the adapter and transmission. The seal fit on the input shaft to the tcase just fine. I'll try the silicone between the two, shouldn't be to bad. luckily the shifter cable I got for the t-case is pretty long. I put new gaskets on the adapter before I installed it all, but I think the silicon thing would probably work better.

Um... so, does the adapter have a seal or not? If the adapter does have a seal, then it is likely that the length (NOT the diameter) of the t-case input is the cause. If your input shaft on the 241 isn't the same length as the one on the 205 you removed, then the seal probably isn't even touching the shaft. Also, if there is a seal inside the adapter, there should not be any oil in between the adapter and t-case, therefore no sealant/gasket required on the 6-hole (5 in your case) flange.

The adapter to t-case flange (4-bolt) should actually have an o-ring if I'm not mistaken - no sealant or gasket required here either.

Pre-assembly pics would sure make this question a lot easier to answer...

You know, I think it has one, but its been awhile since I messed with it. I probably put that transfercase in about 9 months ago. I'm almost 40 and loosing my memory already. I blame my teenage kids for making me this way.

In the next week or two, I'll pull it apart again and take a look. Atleast that transfercase isn't too heavy

The seal is in the case of the 241 not the adapter if it's leaking around the adapter it justs need pulled resealed. If the seal on the 241 is bad it over fills the 241 with trany fluid. There is no seal in the stock chevy 700r to np241 adapter. But I'm not sure on your adapter.

What Wildhair said. It's the seal on the transfer case that's leaking. Even if you RTV the adapter between them, the tranny fluid will overfill the t-case.

Its a good thing this isn't my daily driver, I would have lost my mine long ago. There are just so many little things to do, sometimes it drives me nuts. I just want to drive it. Atleast the engine is reliable, man I love that part about this engine swap.

I'll have to do it next week. I'm a little busy with this week. But I'll take some photos and such. I definitely want the right parts in there.

On more question, I removed the brace from the transmission bellhousing to the transfer-case, that came on these things stock. Would that make any difference. I really didn't have room for it because the clearance is so tight in there. For some reason, the British like to have their frame rails close together.

It'll only make a difference when your transmission case cracks. It might leak then too.

The brace is there to suck vibration out of the transfer case. Drive line vibration like a bad U joint can make them crack faster without one. It would be good to put it back on even if it was modified a bit to clear your frame.
