700R4 to NP241HD Adapter and Clocking ring?

Make sure to tie your transmount (2bolt on bottom) and adapter mount (2 bolt on bottom) together. That rear 4 bolt flange on the 700r4 likes to crack. I went through this on my 350/700r4/np231 combo and replaced the tcase input seal before I realized I had a hairline crack in the trans output flange that didn't show unless it was under the strain of drivetrain weight. I'm pretty sure the PO of the trans new about it but didn't tell me and I had to swap the trans. I used a K case from a Blazer to gain some strength.

BTW my adapter didn't have a seal in it and had an O-ring on the front. You definitely need to seal the extra holes in the adapter because it can fill with oil from the tcase.

So I finally got under the truck. The two bottom bolts that hook the adapter to the Transmission are stripped. So there is a small gap, I tried to tighten them, no go.

Any ideas on what I need to do to fix this? I can't see an easy way to do it while its still installed in the rover

Got it out last night. Took about an hour and a half going slow. This transfercase is light compared to the Land Rover cases.

So I'll drill out the holes and install helicoils tonight.

Take a picture of the transmission end of things so we can figure out your seal mess...

That input shaft on your transfer case is meant to engage inside a seal, and judging from the intact paint on the shaft, I doubt that is happening.

Also, even with 2 stripped bolts on the transmission (or adapter - can't tell from your description) there shouldn't be gaps if everything else is tight and in order... I'd think that it means there are other mis-fits/stresses/issues causing the gap.

But most important - PICS of the parts!

The 700R4 on my commando doesn't have a seal on the output, it relies on the seal of the transfer case to keep it from passing fluid between them.

If that is the case with @sawtooth4x4 then he'll obviously need to gasket/goop the mating surfaces between the trans/adapter/t-case. Oh, and fix the stripped bolt holes, and make sure there are no gaps where the parts mate.

aaaand that the input on the tcase isn't so long that its bottoming on the trans output/
or
that the trans output isn't too long making it bottom on the tcase input before the tcase, adapter and trans are all mated together flush.

Last night, I got it all back installed. And afterward decided I'm going to do a drivetrain lift. I originally did a 2" body lift when I installed the engine and drivetrain. But I want to move the engine up a bit and get things straighter so there isn't any vibration. Sucks but I want it perfect.

I drilled out all the holes on the transmission and helicoiled them. wasn't too hard. Checked my output and input lengths. Everything looked good. I bought some new 10x1.5x40 stainless steel bolts for the transmission adapter. It bolted together and held good. Nothing stripped out. Pretty happy with the results.

Before picture, you can see most of the bolt holes are screwed up.

Helicoiled holes. I made sure to loctite the hell out of the helicoils, they won't be coming out ever again.
