What can anyone tell me about the Dana 44 out of a 79' dodge ramcharger. Is it any good? I heard they were an all time 4 wheel drive. What does that mean?

Not too many people are going to recommend this front end for hard core use. I have used a similar unit under my 85 Ramcharger and did not have any trouble with it. The front, axle under mine, had a CAD system. (central axle disconnect). That is going to be your weak link. You could throw CTM U-joint in it, cromo shafts and you are still going to have that be where you will break. Now, that being said, I ran 42" IROK's with a warmed over 360 small block and did not have any problems with it. I tried to break my axles for EJS 07 and was kinda hard on it and still had no failures on the axles. Your bolt pattern is 5 on 4.5 (if I remember correctly) and is a little on the small side. Other than that it is still a Dana 44 front axle and there are some parts for it if you so choose.

Thanks guys, I am only going to run at tops 37's with a AMC 360. So I think I should be fine. If not I will kick myself later, but I have the axle and want to get this project rolling.

Small bolt pattern and unit bearings, other than that it's a normal Dana 44. It will also have flat top knuckles if you want to do crossover.

Remember you need to properly lubricate the wheel bearings, to do so remove the wheels, and use the access hole in the hub to find the grease zerk on the unit bearing and pump the grease in, it's that easy.

(haven't looked at link)
Yup. I've rebuilt many of them. A LOT of these got tossed because people didn't know you could rebuilt them.

Also the early axles didn't have a grease fitting on the collar, you can easily add one. The stock stub shaft is ridiculously bigger than a part time D44.

If you want to match the bolt pattern, your rear axle choices are pretty limited in strength.
