so i just bought a 85 runner. it came with the auto tranny. I would just as soon keep it, but i have no experience with them. everything else i've had has had the 5 speed. this thing shifts pretty smooth but doesn't downshift when decelerating very well. it also wraps up in first gear before shifting occasionally. can anyone give me a lesson in toy auto tranny's?

If its shifting funny, the first thing you should check is the fluid level....

(get engine to operating temp, place in park with motor idling, and look at dipstick)

Then you could do some sort of coolant flush....

then it gets complicated....but if its shift quality, it is probably somthing in the valve body..

I have an auto trany behind a turbo 4 banger 4runner. I have been thinking about replacing mine as well. There are two types, the A340H is the one I have and the A340F. Both are married with chain driven t-cases. The A340H cannot be separated from it’s t-case (use the same fluid). http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts This site is pretty good to help find out whats in your rig.

I have been pretty happy with mine until lately. It would occasionally pop out of gear on the tough stuff (maybe because of a bad trany-mount) so I just hold it down in low when I do something of consequence. I put a lock-right in the rear and now that I get better traction the chain in the t-case slips (I think). There is a distinct popping in the floor between the two seats when I'm on the tough stuff and when I turn sharp on slick rock. I am going to put in a new chain and see how well it does. Also when I get my vehicle on an extreme angle (like Dump Bump) it comes out of gear even though the shifter is stationary.

I will probably never be able to get enough performance out of it to run larger tiers than 31s with out a ring and pinion upgrade. (maybe 32s could work)

I know a lot of people will think this is messed up behavior for a trany but I have made it up some pretty cool stuff with stock gearing and tires. If you are not too hard core you could get a lot of use out of it.

I would be interested in anyone’s input on this kind of trany swap.

PS. Mine is a little funny shifting between gears too, especualy in 4low when I want it to shift into second or thrid on straight aways.

so i checked out the site you mentioned and i'm running the A340F. I also read that toyota used the same tranny until 1999. I wondering if it's possible to get a tranny from a late model runner or pickup and swap it in. I'll need a strong tranny cuz i've got a 3.5 inch lift and 33's to put on and i'll never roll uphill.

Lock rights normally make loud popping.......along with most other "lunchbox" lockers....

I have been on the trail with some really capable auto's....they just slip A lot! but that's whats nice.
