92 4 Runner Build...maybe

Do you have any pics? How big of a spacer can you go with in the front without causing lots of premature wear? What size spacers were you running in the front to fit 35's?

My spacers were the typical SDORI 1.5" spacer which can net you roughly 2"-2.5" of lift. I wouldn't go more than that, because even at only 2.5", I went through idler arms faster than SSSteve goes through rigs.

Here is a pic of my old Runner with 315/70r17s:

That's good looking! You ever have problems with cv joints or shafts? Or was it just the idler arms? Would you go that same route again or would you do something different? I wish I had an rme sticker!

but to get that 2-2.5" you need to crank on the torsion bars, which makes for a rough ride in the front.

No need to crank enough to make the ride crappy... Because of the nature of IFS geometry, the 1.5" spacer at the ball joint gives you more than 1.5" lift at the wheel. In reality, it is closer to 2" without cranking the torsions at all.

Tyson - PM'd you. :)

this is true, I was just putting out that to get that 2-2.5 cranking of the torsion would be needed. But, with the bj spacer you could relax the torsion bar a bit if you wanted.

What are people's thoughts on switching to leaf springs in the rear? I tried flexing my rear and its as stiff as a board. I'd like to keep the rubber on the ground. It sure would get rid of a few land anchors and weight back there.

What all would be needed other than all the mounts, shackles, and springs? Would it be a smart move? Is there a certain set of springs that would work well on my 4runner and level out with the front 1.5" Bj spacers I'm planning to go with?

did you forget to disconnect your sway bar? if you do i know for a fact that the rear flexes great, i loved my LC80 coils rode better than it ever did in with stocker ones. If did always need longer arms but those arent hard to make or buy id stay with the coils they perform much better and even with the stock suspension set up they worked well

I really doubt the leaf springs would weigh less than the current coil/link setup...

I contemplated the same swap on my last Runner, but decided it wasn't worth the effort and cost. After the OME coils it worked great.

It has been a while since I had coils on a rig. So yes I admit I did forget to unhook the sway bar. I can't imagine it gaining that much. I'm still trying to lay out my build plan. I'd like to go wider in the front which means I'd need to go wider in the rear. A t100 axle would be a nice width. If I did that it would be easier to swap in the new axle with leaves.

I don't think it would lose that much weight either. But it would get rid of the massive control arm mounts that hang down 9 feet.

What are your goals? I think wheel spacers are a nice, cheap way to get more width. I've learned to set a goal for a vehicle and build it to that goal, rather than constantly drifting, trying to improve it every month.

I just saw this thread. I do have the LC80 coils and a top plate spacer front lift. in the rear I ended up about 3.5-4" in the front im about 3". I do know with the top plates I have to fun wheel spacers so my tires don't hit the upper a frame.

In the 3rd gen I don't have the option of tightening the torsion bars but I did in my pick up and if you don't go to much you can salvage some of your ride.

Dang looking at that first pic makes me almost want to go back to black wheels

That's what I'm trying to do is figure out which direction I want to go. Parts keep coming up for sale that I'm interested in but I don't buy them because I'm not quite sure what I want. I want to be able to wheel some and not just car camp and explore. I'm not talking hard core trails, just to get out and have fun with guys like I used to do in my LJ.

Torsion bars are weird. I crawled under there last night to try and understand this suspension. I don't get how a torsion bar works. Seems like there should be a coil or strut or something to hold the front end up. But there's just a long flat bar almost parallel with the ground. Weird.

It's a spring, it's just not a coil spring :). It's fixed on one end to the chassis, and the other end ties into your upper a-arm. As the a-arm moves up, the torsion bar twists and resists that motion just like a coil spring would.
