Land Rover '97 Discovery not starting

Last week my 1997 Land Rover Discovery stopped working. I was on my journey home from work and after I stopped by the store to grab some things the truck made a loud grinding/whining sound when I started it. I turned the truck off and the noise did not stop until I disconnected the battery. Long story short I purchased a new starter ( vehicle would not crank at all ) had the starter tested and it works. Put the starter in and the truck still won't crank at all. I checked all my connections and they are good. My battery is fine and has plenty of power left in it. Any help or suggestions you guys could give me would be much appreciated.

Discoweb is a good place to go for tech stuff but they are a tough crowd. Not always very nice. Also can go to LandRoverForums.com or LandRovers only.com. Much nicer people to deal with. Also Solihull Society LR club out of Denver has a good website and people are nice and will help. There is a guy called DiscoMike who is an excellent tech guy and he is a moderator on Land Rover forums and Landroversonly. You won't find him on Discoweb though. I am not a good tech and don't know what your problem is. Good luck though.

So does it still make the noise with the new starter? Does it make any noise now? It sounds like your starter was stuck but, for it to keep spinning after the key is off is really weird and makes me think its not the problem. Unless you have a short to power somewhere. If it was a short to ground it would of blown your fuse. Check to make sure all fuses and relays work you might of just blown one

I am guessing that the solenoid stuck and ground the old starter to bits and then burnt out. You pulled the battery and it lost juice so the solenoid or whatever landrover has activate the solenoid is toast. It is higher up the line than the starter itself...electrical problem, classic rover

were you batt connections tight or loose on your starter because you'll have that problem if your power wire is touching the signal (or "s") terminal on the starter even if the key was off... it will still crank the starter till you disconnect the battery

That is what happened and it burnt out the starter solenoid. I got it all sorted out. It turned out the be a combination of a bad starter and a bad starter relay switch. Thank you for all your help. You guys rock.
