I'm looking into getting a jeep and I found this one its a 98 grand cherokee limited 5.9 v8. My question is are they notorious for breaking down or are they pretty good vehicles?

I had a '98 and I liked to wheel it,the AWD was nice in the snow, but my overall rating would probably be middle of the road. The trannys suck, and always have problems, but the power from the V8 is impressive. They also have alot of electrical issues.Just my .02

the 5.9 is famous for overheating and the 249 t case sucks and so does the front driveline on them any harder wheeling they like to break.

My 5.9L was pretty reliable until I sold it with just over 100,000 miles. Other than a few minor issues the fuel pump and e-fan had to be replaced. Mine ran a little warm in the summer stuck in traffic but it had full headers/intake/performance computer/etc. I can't say how it would act stock.

Other than the big motor and HD transfer case, they are basically the same as any '96-'98 ZJs. Here is a LINK describing the differences.

After all the power mods it ran like a raped ape... I miss it some times :)

Actually the 96 and newer 249 isn't that bad of a case. It has a locking center diff and is something like a 95/5 rear to front torque split...it can also be run without a front driveshaft, which is helpful because the stock front driveshaft sucks so bad.

But like was said, 231/241/242/atlas/stak swaps can be done in a couple hours.

So I ended up getting it. It had an over heating problem but the guy before me put a new water pump on it and said he hasnt had a problem since. It ran just fine from cedar city to bountiful. It also has a newer engine swapped in with less miles. I dont do a lot of wheelin just some fun afternoon kinda things nothing even close to moab yet.

the 5.9 is a nice motor. Keep them cool and they last a long time.
My father's Durango ran out to 155k miles and he sold it.
Our 5.9 work vans normally run out to 250-300k miles.
shoot mine has 227k and it starts first click everytime.
