9inch 14 bolt dana 60

My humble opinion. Rock what you can get your hands on for the best price. Don't over think this kind of stuff. Yes, my 14B is huge. How many times has it prevented me from having a blast rock crawling? Never. Has it prevented me from going fast or jumping? Nope. Does it hang down a few inches lower than a D60 or 9", and weigh more? Some details are worth overanalyzing (c/o's or airshocks). I don't think this one is.

Unless you're planning on Ultra4 racing I guess. Or being competitive at WEROCK.

i plan on ultra 4 racing.. but dont care to be competitive my goal is to do good for my budget and experience. ..and hopefully improve from there

thanks benjy that a really good point!

I was going to make the comment that "race" and "cheap" don't go in the same sentence but then I got to this post.

I think your rear axle should be decided after your front. If you are doing a stock-ish d60 with 8-lug run a 14bolt or d70 in the rear, if you are running a toy 6 lug up front find a good 6 lug rear. I have never looked at anything other than a 14 bolt for the rear, running with full size broncos I learned that stock 30 spline d60 rears suck. I am also a front d-60 snob.

When it came time to tear down the bronco and build our xj, the 60 and 14 bolt were going under it, I mean you can't have a rig with a d60 and then downgrade to a 44 or 30 in your next rig, that is just weird...

decide on your front axle, then do the rear, those housings from ruff stuff look nice, much cheaper than their 14 bolt housings...

my 14 bolt hasnt given me any problems since the day i got it. it hasnt broken, its never gotten hung up on anything, and so far, it hasnt needed any maintenence.

granted its been sitting in my garage next to a pile of parts, and not in a rig, but still, no issues for me

seriously though, figure out the rig first. the rig, in combination with your driving style and budget, will dictate your build. 9" under a zuki = rockwell under a fullsize.

I was always happy with my dana 70u. Almost as much clearence as a 60, but smooth bottom and 10.5 ring gear and easy to find. Aftermarket 4340 was cheap too.

im thinking about putting my locked and geared +chromo shaft dana 44s under it and save up and do some homework and just take it easy on it tell i get my dream axles

Save up. Do it right once, the first time. I don't know for the front, but I think the best bang for the buck is a spooled true hi9(1849) in a spidertrax 3" 3/8" housing(559) bearings and ends (150), 35 splines set up semi float(350) and chevy brake set up(junkyard and new pads(200). You aren't going to break it in a rig like yours, and it's crazy light. For about 3k you've got a sweet axle. I think mine is about 175lbs loaded. So either save up the dough, or go get a junk yard 14B on the cheap. A stock 9" and a 60 can't compare to a 14b if you're keepin it cheap.

I keep seeing the landcruiser full float (9.5"??) rear axles at the wrecking yard... How do they compare to a 9"?

A hp cruiser front, and that rear really have me thinking of a smaller buggy.

But for now Ill keep my 6000+lb 1 ton TrailBlazer.

It seems like with a stock 9" the third will spit the pinion gear out the front (breaking the 3rd) before a r/p will break.
Truss it and go. The stock shafts will take lots of abuse.

I decided to help back you up on this yesterday.

Apparently my XJ had enough of it's third member...

holy poop! specs of your front 44 do you have problems with it?

Front 44 is out of a 79' Bronco, 4.88's, warn hubs, Alloy USA shafts and joints. I drive pretty aggressively. First 6 trips out, I broke 5 front shafts, the outers were shearing off at the ears, and snapping the threads off on the inners.
After I did Chromos the 2nd trip out I broke a hub... but other than that it's been fine.

im going to put my 44s under hope they already have 30 spline outers or atleast not 21 or 19 w/e stock is .

i know it has ctm joints and i think dutchman shafts so i would assume there not stock size

run these since it will cost me nothing.. go easy on them if i can..

save up do homework and probably end up with some 9s front and rear.
