A Question of Logistics

For many years I've dreamed of doing a big, week-long expedition. I've begun looking into going from St. George to Moab all in the back country. From what I can tell, its doable, but most of the USGS maps are showing info from the 60's. I'm looking for information, has any one does this before? Who is familiar with trails heading from St. George/Hurricane to Hanksville? Also, GPS coordinates of the area would be great as well.
If anyone is interested in helping with planning out a trip like this, that would be awesome.

I think Kurt has recent maps of everywhere on the planet.

Great, I need one detailing the area around Magnetogorst, Russia as well. :)

I was hoping to get Kurt in on this because of his knowledge of the area. I've found a couple of routes on USGS maps, but like I said, alot of the info is from the 60's and 70's.

I think Kurt has already investigated the Moab to St George backcountry route. I'm sure he'll chime in. In fact, I *think* he went from Moab to Kanab last May. It would be a fun trip.

Lots of ways to do it... You'll surely have some miles on the pavement, but you could do well over 1/2 on dirt. I've got a few options mapped out, the ones that comes to mind (without having a map in front of me) would be Moab -> Hurrah Pass -> Lockhart -> Elephant Hill -> Beef Basin -> Elk Ridge -> Halls Crossing via Hwy 276 -> Escalante via Burr Trail -> HITR West to Smoky Mtn Rd via Left Hand Collet Canyon -> Big Water Utah via NPS 230 -> Cottonwood Canyon to Skutumpah -> Kanab -> St George via Arizona

A mix of these:

we aren't thinking of doing it until this fall but it should be fun none the less

Are you planning to do it with Steve (SRN) or are you doing something totally different???

I'll ask around for some more routes to check out... a good freind of mine has done a North to South Utah trip in the dirt, majority in the dirt, started in St. George and went to Idaho. He has also done some east-west routes too. I'll check with him (he is in the middle of a North American to South America trip right now )

Spencer (newtoy) is planning it with me. His place would be the jump off point in St. George. Any information you can dig up would be awesome, Kurt! The route that you mentioned before is pretty close to what I had figured out, just need to narrow down the specifics. I'm thinking that it would be doable in seven days or so, what are your thoughts?
