A Rant About Coffee

My wife is studying for a test tonight when she mentioned that we were out of coffee. Being a good husband, I offered to head to the store and grab her some. I get to our local Dan's and head down to the coffee section and I am presented with a choice. We have always purchased whole beans and ground them ourselves. Our Dan's has two choices for whole beans, Salt Lake Roasting Company or Park City Roasting Company.
It used to be that we would always get Salt Lake Roasting Company beans, but the last time we were down at the Roasting Company's store they had a Protect Wild Utah sticker prominently displayed. We'll that ended our relationship with them. So I grabbed a PC Roasting Company bag to fill up. Well all over their bag was printed, "We are socially responsible, support local and international environmental initiatives, fair trade, organic, blah, blah blah." Sigh. Can't go there.
So now I'm stuck with the mass produced stuff. I start looking through them, and what do I find? Every one of them has some fair trade, organic, eco green friendly bullsh!t printed on the bag. Except Folgers, but Folgers is crap.
Why can't I just get a fraking pound of coffee without having to support SUWA? Hell, just don't tell me thats what you do with the money I give you and I'd be happy! I am so sick and tired of all these company's touting their 'greenness'! Maybe it's my fault because I actually do vote with my wallet. Maybe I should just give up on trying to not support companies that I think are doing the wrong thing.
All I wanted was a good cup of coffee without having to give money to people who hate me! Is that really so bad? Really?

Wow, ya, I noticed that as well. I'm used to drinking some pretty harsh coffee after playing cowboy for a summer up on the mountain, so folgers is pretty good to me and is whats in my coffee maker waiting for morning now.

Early this year, we went to Montana to visit the wife's family. We went to the "Made in Montana" store, well I have this thing for bears, go figure, and they had a bag of Grizzly Coffee,so I bought a bag, brought it home, ground it up, and man, thats good coffee. So as I'm sitting there enjoying this tasty goodness, I read the back of the bag to learn more, well as it turns out, $1 of every bag goes to some enviromental "protect the grizzlies" group in MT, they also make donations to other enviromental groups. Needless to say, I haven't brewed another cup, and to think, I was going to order the 5 lbs bag off their website.

So what exactly do you hate about a dollar going to a protect the grizzlies fund? I can SUWA, that would be a valid point. But a bear? Or something other non-SUWA? So a dollar goes into the rich coffee makers pocket or a dollar goes to a grizzly. Who cares?

I think it's hilarious you won't even brew coffee that your precious dollar has already been spent on the bear. We aren't talking buying the 5lb bag. This is coffee you already bought.

Not to mention just because something says environmental doesn't mean it's SUWA. :spork:

Think of it this way then.

You were walking past their office and whilst pulling your car keys out of your pocket you accidentally dropped a dollar on the ground.

Meanwhile Joe Dickhead from SUWA comes back from lunch with his buddy who secretly works down at the lumber yard notices your dropped dollar. Picks it off of the ground, walks inside the office lunch room and puts your newly lost dollar inside the coffee contribution can, and pours himself a cup of pipping hot Folgers.

Now if you really think about it, this all happened without you knowledge. No harm/no foul!!!

Personally, I drink Yuban. Have for 30 years. Enjoy!!!

I don't drink coffee, never cared for it, so I'm no slave to the bean. But I do love my caffeine. Mtn Dew, Diet Pepsi, energy drinks galore. I am a big fan of tea though. And have spent quite a bit towards organic, free trade teas. I mean, I care about the little people that pick those leaves for me...

Folgers almost every morning for the last 25 years, dark roast mostly. You have to make it right or it tastes like crap.

I can't remember the name of the kind I drink. I grind it at Smiths so whatever brand they sale. Pretty damn good.
I can blame my coffee addiction on my grandpa, when I used to go swap the car to drive to school in Logan he used to have a cup ready for me every morning. Those were the best cups of coffee I ever had.
I agree with you Stephen, don't tell me what you do with my money, because there is a good chance that if I don't like what your doing with it I will not purchase your product anymore.

For the most part I drink tea. Have for the past few years. PG Tips is my brand of choice, steep myself a nice cuppa every morning. My wife on the other hand dislikes tea on the whole and much prefers a cup of dark coffee. So at night she will brew herself a pot, and I'll usually have a cup. So when I do, I like a good cup.
TRNDRVR If it happens without my knowledge, I'm OK with it. I just sick and tired of companies having to tell me what they do with my money!!! I mean, what the hell does "Socially Responsible" mean? Who's society?

After I read this I went down and read the label on my Yuban can. It says something about 'Rain Forest' friendly. Whatever that means.

Any way, like I said, 30 years of Yuban I'm not going to change now. I do understand what you mean though!!!

Personal negative coffee rant here but if you ever stay at my house and make coffee EVERY MORNING it better be f***ing expensive crazy good smelling coffee, none of that cheap s***. When my parents come to stay they drink Folgers half decaf half regular and my house smells like stale coffee grinds and tar, ALL DAY, everyday. Drives me nuts. I am not looking foward to the next four days of detoxifying my house of coffee smell. I don't think they realize that s*** melts into my walls and stays there for a week after. :bryson:

My superpower is an overly sensitive nose, which is most likely why this drives me nuts.
