A friend and I went wheeling up in the mountains above the "I" in Brigham City on Sat. We started at 9:30 am and got off the mountain at 9:30 PM. It was a CRAZY day to say the least. It all started off well, we went up to the top of a mountain and started down a side trail where we spotted an old log cabin. We then turned around and headed toward the trail that took you to the cabin. It was one of the hairiest trails I have ever been on. We made it most of the way down and it was evident that no-one had been on that trail for a while.. there was 2 trees growing in the middle of the trail.
We parked the vehicles and hiked the rest of the way to the cabin. Come to find out it wasn't the cabin we had spotted on top of the mountain. This one was much larger!! We took a few pics on our camera phones and headed back up to our rigs. We started back up the trail but we had a ton of problems getting back up it. The trail was the softest, loosest dirt I had ever been on. My friend in his Early Bronco kept losing traction. He has some large TSL's that really like to dig. We tried to make it up the trial with as little damage as possible but in the process my friend broke his pinnion gear right off!!! It was the gnarliest break I had ever seen.
We got the driveline taken off and started trying to get up the trail. He was having a hard time making it up in 4wd and now he only had front wheel drive. I tried to pull him up with no success. We then hooked my Jeep to a tree and then hooked a tow rope from the Jeep to his Bronco. I got him up to the tree but then there was nothing above the tree to attach to. We strapped his Bronco to the tree and headed down the trail for some help. We met up with his friend in a Scout and headed back up the trail. We made it up to his Bronco right before darkfall and I attached to his Bronco with the winch and hooked the Jeep to the Scout for extra anchorage. We would winch him up then head up the trail and winch him up...etc.. It took us 4 times of winching and pulling before we could get it up to the top. Luckily it was all down hill from there! We made it most of the way down the trail when his track bar bolt pulled through his frame!!! It was dark at this time so I pointed my Jeep at the front of his Bronco and we unhooked the track bar and got the nut out of the frame then hooked it all up with the help of some washers to prevent it from happening again.
It was a really good time and could have been better without the carnage but still good. There are supposed to be abandoned silver mines up in the area.. we didn't find any but maybe one day . The area is only open during summer and fall time so it will be closed very soon. It is a wildlife refuge where they allow hunting during this time of year, which isn't very good when you are wheeling.. no need to get shot .
