Ever been sitting at your boring desk job, confined by the carpeted cubicle walls just wondering what it'd be like to go on a super off-road backcountry adventure with famous people like Kurt Williams and Cody McKendrick? I know I have... Well, now you sort of can!

Where will Kurt and Cody be next? Click the link fool! :p

Stalking shmalking.. But no.. You guys are the first to know. Don't tell Kurt.. I know Jacey already has suspicions and Candace has predicted it for years.

10:30am "Where's Kurt and Cody?" check-in....

Kurt was travelling at 4mph a minute ago, but has been stopped for a bit. This can only mean that Cody's Jeep has broken down.

~900 miles in the dirt, we started in 4-Corners and hit maybe 25 miles of pavement before ending up as close as you can drive to 3-Corners (UT/ID/NV). A solid trip! Amazed the tracking worked so well as we were in some very remote areas (Maze, Henrys, etc). The setup is the brainchild of my freind Ryan Davis, basically I plugged it into my cigerette lighter and slapped a couple antennas on the roof and was good to go. What a trip!

Pretty sweet. I imagine he could sell a grip of these to the RME crew. :D

I've used some Android apps to do similar, but of course that's dependent on cell coverage.

I don't know, a SPOT tracker is only $150 and I don't see too many guys with one of those. Plus a spot doubles as an emergency beacon/messenger.

I have a Spot. There are pro's and con's to each, this used HAM radios so with the right radio you get not only 100% free tracking (Spot has a yearly subscription) but the ability to communicate as well, a Spot message is great an all but some actual 2 way communication is far better. This was all with a handheld HAM unit set up by Ryan, even neater, from his rig they could see on their HAM where we were, so for vehicle to vehicle tracking is was absolutely ideal.

There is a new Delorme GPS that will be coming out soon that allows you send a ~50 digit text message using the Spot system, coupled with a lat/long coordinate provided by the GPS.

They are commercially available already, its a 'digipeater' that plugs into your radio that is the size of a pager, a GPS antenna and the HAM's antenna if you don't have one already. However you have to have HAM license to operate so it won't appeal to nearly as many.

As you can see from my map (each red dot indicates a "hit") there were some rather large sections where we were out of range. This is in part due to the handheld (low power) radio we were using but more so because our unit came un-plugged a handful of times :D

He is the log of my buddy Ryan (the HAM guru) that set this all up:
http://aprs.fi/?call=k6kru&mt=roadmap&z=11&timerange=3600

As you can see there was rarely more than 5-10 miles that we were not getting repeater hits. Keep in mind we were often in deep canyons, and were not sending out signals when the truck was off.
