They are commercially available already, its a 'digipeater' that plugs into your radio that is the size of a pager, a GPS antenna and the HAM's antenna if you don't have one already. However you have to have HAM license to operate so it won't appeal to nearly as many.

aaahhhh... I was waiting for details. :D Sounds pretty good... Ham radios are a freakin' godsend in BFE.

I don't know, a SPOT tracker is only $150 and I don't see too many guys with one of those. Plus a spot doubles as an emergency beacon/messenger.

I think it's just a matter of time, a $150 investment for expeditionaires isn't crazy at all... but if Kurt's deal works just as well, AND allows communication? I'd have to say that's the better setup, just off the top, and I'll be up front and say that I haven't looked too hard at the SPOT. *shrug

10:30am "Where's Kurt and Cody?" check-in....

Kurt was travelling at 4mph a minute ago, but has been stopped for a bit. This can only mean that Cody's Jeep has broken down.

actually, my jeep was not allowed to attend (Cruiser only--but I get it. I also participate in a nerdy vehicle specific off-road event that we exclude other makes from, so it doesn't bother me)

But if you must know, a cruiser was broken down....with a birf that broke in a parking lot ;)

An amazing time. Thanks to Kurt for letting me tag along and to everyone else in the group (not sure if any of them are on here) for being hospitable to the outsider. Can't even begin to touch on the different stuff that happened throughout the trip, but we saw some places that are RARELY seen by anyone, some roads that might not have seen traffic in months or even years, and I came away just like always--in total awe of what a big world we live in and how many amazing places you can find yourself in.

So I was impressed enough with the APRS setup I was loaned by Ryan for the Utah Cruiser Expedition that I purchased my own setup. I need to get it setup and installed in my Tacoma (bringing my antenna count to 7 ) for our "Pony Express Trail" trip this next week. We are running from SLC to Carson City, NV (South Lake Tahoe) following as much of the PET as possible. Its the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express Trail and we want to capture as much of the history as possible. I've got a bunch of prep work to get done on my truck and my gear as I'm actually doing back to back PET trips but I'll try and get the APRS setup up and running... link to follow.
