Two fellow RMEers and myself are planning to hit AF canyon this Monday. We will probably meet at the Doug Smith Autoplex at 5pm, then head into the canyon. We may go to Forest Lake if that trail is open; otherwise we will probably head toward Mineral Basin (assuming our lightly modified vehicles can get through the rock garden--I haven't been there in years).

Anybody else interested?

IN.... I will go close my other monday night run post.

Glad to hear you're in. We weren't trying to step on your toes (referring to your other post); it's just that we've been waiting for AF canyon to open so this time we don't want to head west.

Another RME lurker has told me he'll attend, so there should be five rigs including you. Most of us are stock or close to it, so don't worry about being "intimidated" by any rock buggies. ;)

AF canyon is in good condition. Just went all the way up to mineral Basin, didn't realize there was a lift on the backside of Snow Bird. Definately some sweet back country for skiing. The road has alot of water running down it, which makes it fun. The ATV with locked diffs barely made it up some of the rocks. There is still some small snow patches to cross at the top.

Overall, this trail is somewhat of a worthy Jeep trail, no way a stock truck could clearance the rocks and obstacles. For the first time experience, this is a great little trail.

I will be trailering in, so if you would like to provide an estimate as to when you will be hitting the parking lot at tibble fork that would be great. I plan on unloading there and being ready to hit the road when you guys get there. I will have the white rodeo that doesn't look like a rodeo.

We'll be leaving the Autoplex at 5:00 (or as close to that as possible), then we'll stop at the Chevron in Highland to pick up another vehicle (and perhaps buy drinks), then we'll head into the canyon. I'm guessing we'll arrive at Tibble Fork reservoir parking lot by 5:45.

I will have the white rodeo that doesn't look like a rodeo.

:D I like it already. Turns out my friend and fellow RMEer with the stock TJ is no longer stock--he just texted me to say he now has a 4" lift and 33" tires. Guess I'll be the lowrider now.

Sounds like fun. How would a cherokee on 31's do? My alternator just took a dump and I'm waiting on a bracket in the mail so I can do the GM 1 wire so I may not be able to drive my truck.

How would a cherokee on 31's do?

Many moons ago--we're talking ~10 years--I drove to Mineral Basin in an XJ on 32" tires. I did have rocker armor, though, and I used it once or twice in the rock garden. Other than that, it was smooth sailin'.

I cannot comment on how it would be now. Why not come find out? ;)

Because it's the GF's daily driver and I know for a fact I can take it just about anywhere, just not sure how much will be left when I'm done. :D I don't want to break it since anything I do, I'll have to fix and I hate working on XJ's.

We'll see, maybe I can get my truck back together in time.

You will do fine until the Rock Garden.

The closed sign for Forest Lake is on a sheet of paper by the trail head and you have to read the little print to see that its closed. I didn't notice boulders in the water, but then again we didn't go across. Lot's of ATVs were crossing anyway.

Ozzy, you'll want some sliders on that XJ. The trail doesn't really get fun until the rock garden anyway, so it'd just be frustrating to get there and have to turn around when it gets fun. Hopefully you can make it out. It's a beautiful trail.

you'll be fine ozzy. I did it two years ago in a stock TRD double-cab tacoma. I had sliders, although they never touched. That being said, it was in the Fall, when the rock garden wasn't as big. Either way, you'll be fine in the XJ.
