Sorry to hear, do you think there was any permanent damage? I actually did something real similar on my first ride out with my DR650. It wasn't as bad as yours, but I put a small hole in the engine case after dropping the bike on the shifter. I patched it up with JB Weld, then put engine case covers over both sides!
Too soon to tell if there was damage. It's likely, however! I broke it without noticing it at the time. I then proceeded to ride the bike about a half hour off road, and then 20+ miles back to the hotel at 60-80MPH down a highway and freeway. I actually noticed it when I stopped in the backed up traffic at my exit ramp. I put my boot down on the asphalt as I came to a stop and it slipped, almost dumping me and the bike on the ramp. I couldn't figure out why the asphalt was so darn slick just under my left foot. Then I realized it wasn't the road, it was my FOOT that was slick! My boot and everything rear of the motor is oily. When I tipped the bike to the left it came pouring out pretty quickly, so I'm sure I lost PLENTY of precious motor oil before shutting it down. I believe it holds 1700cc of oil.
It lost a bunch more oil after I parked it, so I know there was still a good amount in there. I'm hoping it was enough. I'm stuck in a hotel away from home so I have zero tools. So, I went to WalMart and picked up some carb cleaner and JB weld. I scratched up the area around the hole with a rock to promote adhesion, and cleaned it up good with the carb cleaner and paper towels and put a good thick patch of JB weld on it. Tomorrow evening I'll fill it up with oil again and try it out. I'm really keeping my fingers crossed... I only have about 5 hours on this bike since I bought it and needless to say would be quite frustrated if I smoked the motor so soon.
The bike has case covers on both sides, but I foolishly left off the main skidplate (everybody learn from my mistake!). The owner had it off when I bought it, supposedly because they had just changed the oil and had not reinstalled it yet. It broke about 1/4 inch away from the case cover....
