BUT...where's the fun in that?Honestly, the best way to deal with coons is a live trap baited with tuna.
BUT...where's the fun in that?

I mean to say, no shooting .22's at pests in Shawn's yard, which is in relatively close proximity to many humans, which present a clear risk for accidental injuries directly related to firearms, proximity, and discharge of the aforementioned firearms... and stuff.
So there. Bring me some ICE CREAM!!!!
As far as danger to other's saftey, the kiondof pellet gun he is looking for isn't really any safer than a .22 short. It's just not illegal to shoot because it isn't a FIREarm
Doesnt that depend on what city you are in? I know a few cities that consider pellet guns, airsoft, bows, etc all as firearms.
Some allow it, some dont, some require notification before use...
Sandy doesn't count.
I live in the county, I can discharge highpowered rifles in my yard.
A long barreled .22 with .22 shorts
I have one that is quieter than an air rifle.
Racoon are pretty tough, tenacious animals. A big boar will go over 30 lb's, too. That's getting into "big game" territory for an air rifle. With any of the cheap Wally world .177 calibers like the Gamo or Crossman, you'll be limited to head shots only if you want a clean kill. And I'd limit the range to less than 20 yards too - 10 yards much mo betta. 'Coon have pretty tough skulls.
All that said... I've killed a dozen or so with my Beeman R9 .20 caliber, using 14 gr. Crosman Premiere's at about 850 fps. All were under 15 yards, and shot cleanly between the eyeball and the ear.
Traps are by far the most effective way to deal with racoon though. I'd much rather use a conibear in a bucket set and kill them outright than deal with trying to get them into a box trap and catch them alive though.
