During the run off Mineral Basin can be a blast! That upper road is always changing based on the amount of water coming down. Even if you are hard core like that Black_ZJ dude is, it is just fun to wheel during that time of year.

Sorry, I was more pissy yesterday than usual, caught a cold over the weekend and it was kicking my trash. AF Canyon is my favorite place to camp and explore, but it is mostly 2wd and scenic trails. It's also fun watching drunk rednecks flood their trucks up at Forest Lake.

If they are in the lake, get their plate numbers...

that's when it's time to bust out the video camera. I remember that guy on youtube who posted his video of himself driving through forest lake, then someone got his license # off the video and he got busted. It's idiots like that who get our few remaining trails in jerpoardy :(

What are you looking for in a trail? What was lame about 5 mile? Af canyon is beautiful, and it's fun to camp, but the trails aren't even a little bit challenging. I'm bored with any rig with tires bigger than 35's up AF canyon.

Agree Steve. What are you looking for. If its difficult you are looking for AF is not the right location and it dont think it will be open until late July.
5 mile is ok, you could try Snakes (Rattlesnake and Constrictor) . If you have never done it, its might be worth your time. If you are not satisfied with Snakes, Little Moab is about 20 - 30 minutes from 5 Mile.

If you end up coming down, let me know I might run out with you.

I'd be down with a 5 mile run in the near future. I have only been out there on ATV's and it was a lot of fun but I still need to get my TJ out there.

I'm going to head up tonight on the dirt bike to see what it looks like. I imagine everything above tibble fork will be covered in snow, but we'll see. I went up about a month ago, and the river was rediculously high. I'm guessing there will be a fair amount of cleanup opportunities as trails wash out this year.

Last year they contracted out a lot of the repairs.

I went up there tonight to find this:

WHen they say "trail closures" they mean "nothing is open, not even the gravel roads up to granite flatts or silver lake flatts."

I asked the forest service lady when she thought they'd be open and she had no clue. So I drove up to tibble fork to see where the snowline was. I saw a moose drinking from tibble fork, but I couldn't get my camera on before it left.

it looks pretty dry to me:

This was at the end of the tibble fork parking lot:

1/2 mile up the road I found this:

Wow. Maybe the canyon is closer to being opened then I was thinking. To me, it looks like the snow line is somewhere around 8000-9000 ft, which means that Forest Lake would still have a bit of snow in the shadows, but for the most part, should be right at the melting point. (First lake pic, hill on left is about 8k, right is about 10k, middle is about 11k)

Forest Lake is in the 8500s, Mineral Basin, Mary Ellen Gulch, and Miller Hill look to be in the 10,000s. Silver Lake Res is at about 7500, and Milk Maid gets almost up to 9k.
