new guy here. i just bought a jeep a couple weeks ago. its an 88 wrangler with the 4.2 liter. i found this site looking for info and tips and thought it looked cool. my jeep runs runs good but idles way rough. well i've learned about the fact that the stock carb on these things are terrible and replacing them are the only cure. any info or help from others would be much appreciated for a new guy. thanks

Welcome aboard. Don't know much about the carb thing, but a lot here do. Good luck, nice looking Wrangler.

Welcome

The carbs on those are not terrible. And they are easy to rebuild even if you have never done one before. $20 for a rebuild kit and one evening and you will make that old carb work much better.

But there are better options and there is a reason many of them get replaced with the MotorCraft 2100 carbs. Those are easy as well, cheap to find, and inexpensive to adapt. If you have questions post up and I am sure we can help you out.

thanks guys, i actually found what looks like a sweet deal on ebay for an M2100. this guy seems like he knows what he's doing with good feedback. the main reason i want to just upgrade is because i sent the jeep to a mechanic and had him try and tune it and get it running good but it stills runs bad and he said it had a new carb on it. it seems mine fits all the typical descriptions of what these carter carbs run like. we'll see i'm not in too big of a hurry other than i just wonder if it will pass inspection now. tell me what you guys think of the ebay deal?

That looks like all the parts you need. But I would not pay that much.

I would expect to pay:
$30 for a junk yard carb (just get the right one)
about $20 for the adapter and gaskets
$20 for a rebuild kit

Then plan on a new air filter assembly, breather, scrap parts to make the throttle linkage, etc.

All together I would think you can do it yourself for $100 and have more than what he is offering.

Now I wish I had documented all the steps and price when I did mine. It will take you a few nights if you work slow like me, but it is not hard to do. I found that some junkyard carbs work very easily, some need modification, and others wont work. there are lots of different years they were made and getting the right one does save some time.
