Yeah its still has me in question, yeah my tube is 2" but it does have that 1/4" steel plate welded to it and that is the width of the frame rails. which makes it really thick. but then it tapers.

The inspector was nice, and said if i had questions i could ask the highway patrol at their office. maybe ill take the bumper in, and ask them with it not being mounted on the vehicle, because yeah... it has expired plates. its much stronger than the factory tinfoil bumper being DOM tube. even if its not 4.5" past the frame rails.

I do have a yj with bumpers that are no way close to covering the width of the body, never have had anyone question it doing inspections for the 13 years of owning it.

YJs came from the factory with those little bumperettes, and in some cases no rear bumper at all. When I had the stock front bumper it didn't cover the whole body. That's probably a big reason no one has said anything.

The factory CJ and YJ bumper do not cover the width of the rig. That is why they get away with it. There are lots of gray areas in the SI manual. This is why it is always changing. I talked with the UHP guy that is in charge of the SI here in Logan about 2 months ago. He told me that they really dont know what they are doing. They try to find standards on certain things as much as possible. They also get lot of info from shops as they come around and speak to them.
