After finishing repairs on my newly acquired 4runner, the wife and I decided to take our youngest on a quick overnight trip.
We left Saturday morning with one or two things (my wife is a minimalist).

We headed up highway 6 when I decided I've driven that stretch a hundred times too many so we peeled off for Fairview. We stopped at Huntington res to check out the mammoth.

From there we headed down buckhorn and stopped at all the usual places to share then with my son. He loved the dinosaur track.

While we were at the track an old fellow wandered up and told me his brother was the one who had discovered it. I believe he said his last name was Jensen. He had grown up in Lawrence and worked Temple mountain and several other uranium mines. He was 82 he said and had lung cancer from working the mines. Such a neat guy. We parted ways and headed to Mexican hat road to camp for the night.

I walked down the closed stub road we were camped at the head of and found this old fire pit.

Woke up to a beautiful morning. Made some sausage egg and cheese sammys in the pie iron, packed and headed out.

On the way out we came upon a snake the had been ran over. I got out to see what kind of snake it was.

Saw this about two feet away. Not sure if it got squished out or was thrown up due to duress.

Didn't want the snake to suffer after half of its body being squished so I used a 165gr projectile from my namesake to remove it's head from a safe distance.

After that excitement we stopped in Huntington for a quick drink and top off the tank. Headed back up the canyon and home via Scofield since I hadn't been by there in years.

Both the 4runner and the 4 year old did great on their first trip to the swell. Many more to follow I'm sure.
