Antarctica. The Penguins.

We spent time with three species of penguins- Adelie, Gentoo and Chin Strap. They have no land predators except chicks can be killed by other birds (Skua), so they are not concerned about us really at all.

If you want to test your penguin identification skills, the Adelie are all black and white with a white patch around the eyes, Gentoo have the orange/red beak and chin straps are pretty obvious how they got their name.

For as awkward as they are on land, it is amazing how far they nest from the water. We hiked to one colony that nests on a ridge about 600 foot elevation. Some are known to end up 60 miles or more from the edge of the sea ice. In the water they are as quick and graceful as any thing.
