My Jeep is on the mend and the car rental company gave us a Ford Escape. We've averaged 25mpg over the last week and a half. got it up to 32mpg on the highway.

This is from Consumer Reports. All 2011 and overall MPG instead of city and highway.
Ford Escape Hybrid / $32,575 / 26 MPG
Nissan Juke SV / $23,300 / 24 MPG
Toyota RAV4 4 Cyl. / $25,405 / 23 MPG
Mitsubishi Outlander Sport ES / $23,995 / 23 MPG
Most others in this category were 22 MPG and the worst were Dodge Nitro SLT (3.7 Liters) and Jeep Liberty Sport at 16 MPG.
Note that these are 2011 and are just to give a little perspective.

My last trip to Spokane I rented a Ford Excape. I really liked that little SUV. I told my wife several times that I really liked it. I never had the Hybrid version but I am sure you may get close to your 30 mpg. The thing to remember is that any small SUV will probably never hit your 30 mpg. Most are just too boxy.

I drive an Escape Hybrid for work, and we get right around 31 mpg overall. We aren't gentle on it either (dirt roads/two track/washboards). I'm very impressed by that little SUV.
