Any midwife or ob/gyn recommendations?

I've lived in SLC for about a year now. Recently got married and am in need for some recommendations for a female OB/GYN or Midwife (CNM). I know a lot of you have kids, so hopefully you remember the doctors you liked. Also, if there's any way you could be so good as to ask your wives, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

My wife and I just had a baby and used Central Utah Women clinic in American Fork. They have a team of 6 Nurse Midwifes that work there. We loved them and our experience there. If you are planning on having a Baby with them they only deliver at American Fork hospital and Timpanogos hospital.

Dr. Ward (male) or Laura Zaugg (female-midwife) at lakeview ob/gyn in Bountiful... Best around

Thanks! It seems like a lot of the hospitals have midwife teams where you end up seeing various midwifes at check-ups, then whoever happens to be on duty delivers the baby. Is that how it is with this team? I would like to have the same midwife that is with me through all check-ups and delivery. I have all these ideas about how a delivery should go, and want to have someone who knows what I want and will be on track with me.

Dr ward delivers each of his babies (did all of ours), and Laura also delivers each of her babies. My wife worked for them, and had Ward for a doctor. I as a husband have been very impressed as well.

Dr Ward delivered our baby, and was there through the whole process. He was great, and I agree with one of the best!

Yep, all natural is the goal. I actually prefer a home birth. My mother had all 8 of her children at home, 3 with no midwife. So, I think home births can be great. My husband does not agree :), so hospital it is. I would like to go as natural as possible; no IV and I want the ability to get up and walk around if things are taking too long. So, I really need a doc or midwife that can let me have it my way and won't fight me on it (unless complications came up).

How far along are you? My wife is doing hypnobirthing or that is the plan atleast. You two share alot of the same ideas I will let you know what we find. Have you looked into the park city hospital? There is a midwife at lds named sandie bonnair that is susposed to be great with natural birth.

So, I'm not very far along at all yet. But I'd love to stick with the same doctor/midwife from the first visit.
I don't know a lot about hypnobirthing, but I am not interested. Its not for me. That midwife you mentioned, at LDS hospital, is part of a team that works together as a unit, so I would not be able to have her guaranteed every time. There are other highly recommended midwives in that team that I also looked up.

So, another thing is, I've heard the hospital you choose can be more important than the doctor/midwife. So, any suggestions on which hospital is best? Are they good during and after delivery? Are they tight on unnecessary procedure rules?

We have been going to Margie Battson(sp) at Alpine (up near the Avenues) for a while now. She was awesome! We also went w/LDS Hospital, was a very good experience. I hardly knew the nurse was even there, very transparent, awesome before, during and after, very hands-off. Basically, we used their room, and that's about as involved as they got. My wife was very happy with them. No BS procedure, and they let her go as soon as they could, since she didn't want to stay in the hospital. They also had a.. kind of a hot tub I guess, for water births if that's your thing.

Congratulations, btw. :D How are you liking Utah?

I should add that Margie is the only person my wife saw for exams/checkups, and she was the only one "on call" when it was time to deliver. :D

Thanks! I love utah!
Does her name happen to be Margaret but she goes by Margie? If so, I read someone else's suggestion of her as well. I am leaning towards LDS hospital, so that is great to know. Its not our closest hospital, but it seems like a good one.

Wow. Everyone loves Dr. Ward. Only problem: he's male. I don't like the idea of anyone other than my husband down there. I imagine I'll get over it after having a baby, but for now, I want a female.

Our baby boy would be dead had we done a home birth... My wife was going all natural, and then her placenta tore, filled the babies lungs with blood, and dropped it's heart rate to almost nothing. The nurses came flying in from all around, Dr. ward was there within a minute or so, emergency C-section performed and boy was out in about 5 minutes time, alive and well. Had we been at home without the monitoring equipment or next to the OR I am sure he wouldn't have made it. SO I side with your husband.

my wife was the same way but after our first, she prefers a male obgyn now. her doctor is doctor robert merril. his office is at the riverton hospital. great guy, just delivered our baby boy a week ago. he delivers all of his babies unless something comes up of course.

Obviously complications are why we all have babies in hospitals nowadays. Last minute complications, like what happened to your wife, are rare. THE only reason to deliver at a hospital is just in case something goes wrong.

I've also heard horror stories of first-time moms getting unnecessary, life-altering decisions made for them by their doctors or nurses because of no other options being given to them, and they don't know better. The lay midwives I know are good about educating their clients about their options and the whole process. Doulas, I've heard, are good for this as well.

I plan to take what I love about home births and apply it to the hospital experience as much as possible. I might irritate the nursing staff with my stubborn need to be in control and refusal to be hooked up the whole time and when I walk around randomly, but I want the experience to be good for me.

So, what changed? Did she just get over the whole shy/private feeling? I don't know how to quite get over that.
