Any Netware geeks around here?

I'll start by saying I know absolutely nothing about anything netware. Never used it and hope to (for the most part) keep it that way :D. Anyways, we have one very old fileserver still kicking around that's running Netware 5. The only person that knew how to do anything with it quit a few weeks back, now we need to add a new user...how do you do it? From the command line? The server appears to be logged in so I think I could do it from the command line if I knew the correct command(s). We don't even know the admin username and password at this point (haven't tried too hard to figure it out though). We plan to pull the remaining files off and move them to an updated server but till then I need to figure this out... :(

I can't for the life of me remember... I have my old Netware class books at home that I can look up for you if nobody has responded by then.

Look in your Sys/Public/win32 folder for NWadmn32

Get on Microsoft messenger if you need some help. I'm just starting to turn off my Netware.

If you can find the C1 folder (looking for that, but I don't have an NW 5 servers and I'm pretty sure it's in a different spot from 5 to 6--on my NW6 server it's in the SYS/public/mgmt folder), that'd work as well. It will take 100 years to load (very efficient, compact Java code  ) from the server but will do whatever you need it to.

It's basicly DOS.

.....wait, get on a Windoze machine. It's 100% different on a Mac (and you'll have to 'map' an IP to a folder---at least that's how we did it here when it was in production), and honestly, I never figured out how to do ANYTHING other use it as a file server from OSX

To browse directories in Netware from the command console, type 'edit'. You can then press <Insert> to see directory listings and navigate those.

Any PC logged into the Netware tree as admin should, by default I think, have a Z:\ drive mapped to the Sys volume. Console One can be found here: Z:\mgmt\ConsoleOne\1.2\bin\ConsoleOne.exe

mbryson is correct, you want to be on a workstation (using NWAdmin or ConsoleOne), not the server, to add/change/delete users.

Good riddance to Netware but I've got a few 3rd party administration tools I can send your way if needed. They are for Windoze BTW.

yes, please do send them. email

I was able to find the ConsoleOne.exe app but when I try to launch it (wether by CLI or GUI) I get an error that says I don't have permission to the registry. I'm logged in to the local machine as the Administrator and I've mounted the Netware server as the Administrator.

Are you running the NW client on that machine? Our email is still on a NW server (and honestly, I really do like Groupwise the more I learn about Exchange) and I have to have a machine that's logged into Netware 'natively' to even make anything work.

Sorry I've tried purging all Novell knowledge from the crevices of my mind and denying any knowledge of the layoff company of Utah County... -_-

I'm sorry. I'm amazed it's taken this long for them to die off. Groupwise must have singlehandedly kept them in business for the past 5-7 years.

Good to know. Curious what you like the most about Exch.?
It's been nearly 3 years since I migrated so my memory of GW is a bit fuzzy. For one thing, Exchange has been much more stable than GW; no unplanned downtime in 3 years. Exchange OWA is much better than Groupwise WebAccess, providing nearly all the functions of the Outlook client. There's only one thing GW did better than Exch that I can recall, which is message tracking and message recall. Frankly it really hasn't been missed.

I'll give you the OWA client. My GW box has been UBER stable here and where I've worked in the past. Kinda the traditional NW servers that need to be rebooted 'sometimes' when you do a service pack.

Caleb, did you get your user added?

And I can't praise Exchange Activesync and RPC Over HTTP enough. Natively syncing our WM5 and WM6 based phones over SSL is a godsend.
