Water deep and not too often depending on the weather. Some people on canals flood their lawn once a week. In the hottest weather I water every three days and adjust the time for each spot up and down depending on how the lawn looks.

In addition to what Jack said, get a good programmable timer that can be programmed for multiple start times. Instead of watering each zone for 21 minutes (or whatever), water each zone for 7 minutes, 3 times. The soil can only absorb a certain amount of water before it starts to run off. Dividing the total watering into multiple short sessions allows you to water deeper, and wastes less water. Water only at night, of course. There is a web site that can help you know how much water your lawn needs given the current weather. Let me see if I can find it...

Jack is correct. Don't water now like you would in say July or August, sort amounts of water though out day is better that one long watering time. Different parts of the yard need more or less water do to how much sun it see's. The less you water the longer the roots will want to grow down and look for water. Aerating will help promote more root growth. Gears drive sprinklers and impact sprinklers will need to run longer than pop up sprinklers or sprinklers that are shrub sprinklers.

I blew-out my sprinklers one year and it was a pain. Since then (the last 4 years) I have been turning off the water, opening the valves 1/4 turn and letting the drains do their job. Not one issue.

How often you need to water also depends a lot on the slope of your property for runoff purposes. I can flood my neighbor's yard if I'm not careful. During the peak of summer I typically water twice a night for 15 minutes each zone. The more mature your lawn gets, the easier the whole process gets.
