Anybody Running an Oil Bypass Filter?

Is anybody running or have any experience running one of these oil bypass filters? There are several out there ranging from 200$ to 800$ and it seems like a great idea but would like to know if anybody has actually done this and been satisfied. Is it worth it? I'm looking to run it on a 7.3 powerstroke with 270000. My oil is and has always been dark from the first drive after an oil change to the time I change it. I've always used a Motorcraft filter or had it done at the ford dealer every 3-5k. Since the pricey fuel injection system is powered by the engine oil via HPOP It seems like the cleanest oil possible would make lots of sense for longevity of the injectors & other engine parts.

They all claim that you can significantly increase your change intervals and longevity of the engine by way of filtering oil down to 2 microns or so as opposed to the 20-40 micron high flow filters. I'm pretty skeptical of going more than 5k on an oil change though. Also where do you get oil samples tested locally in the Salt Lake area?

Any personal experiences or knowledge?

3-5K seems like a very short interval. I have it done every 15-18K. I use full synthetic, and have the fuel filter replaced at the same time. The oil stays clear for many thousands of miles after changing. Other than the factory oil, the truck has always had synthetic. Maybe this is why the oil stays clear.

Wheeler Cat does those tests for half the price. And you can drop off samples at any Wheeler Cat shop. We do samples on pretty much anything; gas/diesel, trannys, tcases, axles, whatever. Boats, RV's, Motorcycles, Planes, Trains, Automobiles.......

Thats Just what I was hoping for, thanks!

Peter I would be thrilled if I can go as long as 15-18k on a change, but without a common rail I'll have to test it and see how it holds up to the HPOP. I haven't had my truck since new so I don't really know how it was treated the first half of its life. If I go this route with extra filtration I will run syn and test it. I have used synthetic before but it gets so dirty I end up changing it on the same interval as dino. I'm sure your running syn since new has something to do with your long lasting golden oil, what filter are you using?

I don't run a bypass but I still stretch my oil changes. I run synthetic oil and do samples every 3K. At the same time I do samples I just replace my oil filter. My last change was after 15k miles

If you only drive 5-10k miles a year then it's not worth the investment, but if it's a DD you will break even in a year or two. I was discussing this with a few diesel shop owners and after explaining to them how little I will be driving it they said it would not be worth it.

The filter is whatever the Shell service station puts in. The oil is Rototella.

I put a lot of miles on my truck with my job and playing when not working. last year >20k. My oil is gets black fast typically so I hope it works like they say it does. I figure the cleaner the oil the better and I want this thing to last for many more years as trouble free as possible. I decided to pull the trigger and got the NUC kit for 195. It basically included: two braided ss lines with an fittings, additional fittings to plumb it to the existing oil system, a mounting bracket, a filter mount, and a amsoil 2 micron bypass filter. It was easy to install, I rigged up a ball valve on the return side with a in-line T I got from House of hose and rubber so that I can easily catch oil samples for testing. I'm running synthetic rotella and I will get it tested at 5k and see how things are holding up. I'll post up then with an update. I got a not so good picture but better than nothing. Thanks for all your input. On a side note jeep is on track to be ready for easter as well :)

FYI they ship really fast.

By-pass filters can reduce engine wear significantly... better than changing your oil often. Of course, it's best to use a good synthetic to get your money's worth. Petroleum oils produce their own contaminants that will shorten the life of an AMSOIL by-pass filter which is not to say you can't use regular oils, it's just not the best choice.

I run a by-pass oil filter on each of my vehicles... a secondary by-pass filter will filter 10+ times better than a regular oil filter and make the oil last longer... not to mention the engine. Some don't see the need... but I actually find it difficult to run a motor without one! On my 4x4 I went with the biggest Amsoil EaBP filter but had to tool it down (reduce the flow rate to 1/2 qt per minute) because they aren't made for small engines. A stock EaBP-120 mount will kill a small motor (the oil restricting orifice is way too large). The extra oil capacity provided by the filter is a big bonus, nearly 4 quarts.

Using the correct synthetic... you can go year after year without draining the engine oil (servicing the filters as required). I use the above set-up on my Chevy Prizm also... the little beater is at 76k/3 years on the oil change and due for another sample. Search "clean oil saves fuel", machinerylubrication.com ... unbiased information that might change any misguided opinions. The site is a great resource for coming up to date about engine oil and auxiliary/secondary oil filtration.

got first sample at 5k. I was told the B grading was due to unusual sodium which is most likely from snake oil I put in the initial oil change. Next test at 7500 miles. I apologize for the bad image I don't know how to upload a pdf file.

The test at 7500 was also good, I changed it at 10000 anyway and haven't had a chance to test the sample. All in all for 195$ and 1/3 as many oil changes, it was a success. I'll try to remember to post up the results for the 7500 test and the 10000 test when I get the 10000 done. I'm going to install one on our 6.0 as well.
