I was failed on my safety inspection due to my exhaust not extending to the back of the vehicle. I need to have a pipe mandrel bent around my 4-link, so it will be somewhat tricky. I'd take it to the guy who installed my exhaust but it would be pricey for something I will likely remove after passing inspection. Ideally I'd like to have something made lowbuck and temporary, so the bends wouldn't need to clearance the suspension at full travel.

its a drive but reed muffler (in ogden) rerouted my entire exhaust to clear my new leafs, shackels and shock mounts for $50. Seems like they had to rehang the muffler as well. I did have them do my entire exhaust shortly before i made the changes so maybe they were being nice, but they are way reasonable. The guys son is on the board. has the chevy with mog axles.
i can look up their # if you want. just let me know

Why does it have to extend to the back of the vehichle? How do Dodge Vipers pass? The stock exhaust on my Ford truck exits out the side although it is behind the rear tires.

hmmm I think you should check the regulations if you can, none of my junk had full length pipes, all ended in front of the rear wheels, to the side. I've had people tell me all kinds of stuff, lots of "big fish syndrome" out there. Fight the power!

Anybody know where I can find the code regarding exhaust system requirements? I've checked throughout Section 41 without finding anything.

I think the rules say something about having the exhaust exit behind any passenger-compartment windows, or something to that effect. Trucks and Vipers' passenger compartments end pretty far forward of the rear of the vehicle, while the Cherokee in question has "passenger compartment" all the way to the back.

Makes sense to me, anyway. -_-

That makes sense. The turndown and exhaust entering the vehicle has never been an issue, even when letting the Jeep idle while warming up. :-\

I had my truck (full size Chevy) passed last summer. My exhaust is cut off about one foot behind the cab under the bed. They looked up the reg and said that all the exhaust had to do was exit behind the passenger compartment.

It doesn't have to be pretty. Hell just get some cheap pipe and adapters at autozone. Clamp em up and take it back, then once you get home take it all off. Hold it up with some wire or something. I kept my original exhaust so I can just bolt and unbolt during inspection time.

Man, what a pain in the a$$ this is becoming. No real muffler is going to fit under the jeep because of the suspesion and the only mufflers we can fit are all banned by the super strict safety inspection laws.

hmmm it's looking like I might have to make my 78 Cherokee a 2 passenger so I don't have to run the pipes all the way back. Or just hope.

I've got a 3" round Magnaflow I'm going to use on my YJ. I'd bet that you could run two of those type and be able to package it pretty well.

We looked at those but decided that I wouldn't have been able to fit the 4" Mag with boxed ends due to my frame-side upper mounts in the rear. The Dynomax Bullet fits nicely because it's shaped similar to a glasspack, 4" diameter and 18" length. I think I'll be able to pass it, we talked to a UHP investigator and he OK'd it (but we didn't give him the full story so I'm not recommending everybody try this).
