Anyone buy a 350 core?

Ok, I found a place that remanufactures Chevy 350's. There is a $225 core deposit, so if I send the core back I get $225. The only problem is, shipping is almost as much as the core, so I gain very little by sending it back.

Are there any local engine rebuilders who buy cores? What is the going rate? Does anyone want my core? (88 chevy 350 TBI. Come hear it run....until Saturday :)

I think you know
I don't know today's going rate but I can say that its no where near the core change.
Years ago when I was in the business the core deposit on a SB Chevy was a round $200 and double that for a 4 bolt main. The shop would pay $50 for good rebuild candidate (core) and $100-150 for a 4 bolt main. Then we stopped buying 2 bolt all together unless they had one piece rear main seals.

Who did you decide to go with? Are you going with a standard stock rebuild or are you having them put extra goodys in to the mix?

Well......here's the plan so far.

My current motor is an 88 350 TBI. Out of a Blazer, with 700r4. What I'm thinking is having this place in WA send me a long block. It would be the same thing only I'd have it balanced, heads ported and polished, and an RV cam installed. The dude said it would make around 280 hp, and (the assumptiuon is) it will work with all the factory sensors, computer, trottle body, etc. (which is what I want). The biggest hang up is the cost of shipping....$175. It makes sending the core back kinda worthless....I'd only end up getting $50 for it. There is a local outfit I want to check out that Carl turned me onto, so it's not set in stone just yet. But this place soudns the best so far, despite shipping costs. At least I don't have to pay sales tax.

Wouldn't you be cheaper to have somebody rebuild your longblock locally. That way you could have it balanced at the same place.

You'd think so.....I just called a local machine shop/builder, seemed like a nice guy......but I'd be paying about $200 more overall for the same things. Even when shipping is considered. If y'all have recommenations on good local machine shops I will take them under advisement....

Call C&T Machine in Orem Best Machine shop I have Ever worked with.

Felt's Machine Shop in Ogden does a good job also. Ask for Steve. He runs the place.

Was it a money issue? Ron wouldn't build an engine or start to build one with no money down....

nope, we actually had put 20K down (for two BB engines)...that was half the estimated costs. I'm not positive what the exact issue was but all I know is he kept lying to us about one thing or another. We ended up loosing 2K to him and ended up spending $43K total for the two engines at another shop...he missed the train on that deal...

Oh that sucks!

Why is it that mechanics/machinists are so (generally speaking) damn bad at customer service, telling the truth, telling customers at first sign when something is going wrong, etc etc? Drives me crazy. I'm sick of people fixing things that I didn't ask to be fixed (specially when they aren't broken). I guess that's why we wrench on our own, right?
