If it was me, I would put the money in the 700r4 and run a doubler with the 4:56 gears. you going to run the 454 and the bottom end power will make up for the diff in gears. Big blocks dont like alot of rpm. The 454 is a stroke motor comparded to the 427, 402, 396 which are all spinning motors(short stroke high rpm's). Just my .02$.

I'm not putting another red cent into that 700r4. Total bill so far is about a grand for a marginal transmission that managed to grenade an output shaft and tear the center out of one of the clutch hubs--- with a 200k TBI 350. What's that got, an angry 150hp? 200ft.lbs on a good day? Not enough to do that to it. The overdrive? well, I can drive a little slower. Probably a good idea, really, on H1 runflats and 37's. :D

Honestly, at this point a transmission that will hold up is more valuable than the OD. Keep in mind that a decent big block is going in, and should be north of 400ft.lbs. Not killer power but a good bit more than is in the truck now-- and the current 700, rebuilt and fresh, stll shifts like sh*t, and does not inspire confidence.

Also, you're totally right-- the 454 in my work truck was killed by the PO floating retainers off the valves. I dropped 3 about a week after I got it-- they been hammered to death and broke. I do not rev anything I own past about 4500, EVER. And I don't think the big blocks I've had have even seen that more than once. Makes me nervous with all those heavy springs and valves bouncing around. :D

BTW, where are you??? I keep seeing that you're in town and want to stop over and say hi. ;)
