anyone make their own shifter?

for an AT. I am trying to find something like Lokar's street rod deals, or the B&M Unimatic, but that mounts to the side of the tranny instead of on top...

Wondering if anyone has made their own... would the transmission's own detents be enough to keep inadvertent gear changes from happening??

Hmm. Methinks I"ll have to just try it and find out. Damn custom baloney.

On my TF999 the transmission's own detents are plenty to keep it from accidentally shifting. I have taken out all the detents from my shifter, so that I can get to reverse faster. Even with the hardest hits, it's never shifted on me unintentionally. It would be very easy to make your own shifter using a B&M (or whatever brand) shifter cable. I may end up doing this myself, just because my shifter is kinda ugly. Are you planning on using a cable, or are you going to make linkage with little heims and rods? What transmission do you have?

Ditto. The Chebby's I've done will stay put just fine also. Steer away from cables, they'll just break and cause you problems. Build a good linkage (I know, PITA), and you'll only do it once.

Thanks guys.

What I am thinking of is a fairly short shifter mounted right to transmission, on the driver's side... preferably right to the... thing that the linkage mounts to LOL not sure what you call that. Anyway, just an idea, we'll see how it goes.

edit: RockMonkey, it'll be a TH400.

That sounds like the "road" fix I did a couple of weeks ago. My linkage for the trans broke so I had my 9 year old stand on the brake pedal while (laying under the truck) I jammed this biatch into gear. We finished our work and got the truck home, where I drilled a hole in the floor and rigged up a 3/8" rod to use as a shifter. I drove it like that for another week.
I think your home brew shifter would work fine. Might take some trial and error to get it just right, but you know how that goes :D .

I think it CAN work, doesn;t mean it will work. It really depends on how its executed. If you plan to do a link setup then it should work, if you plan to do a solid rod right off the shifting rod of the transmission I dont think it will work because of the leverage a 2' piece of steel hanging off the transmission will cause. To help explain what I am saying a little better, I had no shifter on my 203 (I know, tranny vs. t-case same rules though :D) and it never popped out of gear no matter, I then installed the shifter off the 203, it was only about 6" long with a knob on the end, but when I hit big jarring bumps it would occasionally knock it out of gear because of the additional leverage. Hope that makes sense, its surely doable though.

EDIT: guess I should have read the rest of the thread before replying, Hickey already said the same thing :rofl:
