I think she is saying that it is a very dangerous cave, and that it would be stupid and redneck like to try and bust the gate open and get into the cave. I dont think there is an issue with just going up there and looking at, but due to the gate, there really isnt anything to see. Really, this is no nutty putty we are talking about here, this sucker is seriously dangerous, and even experienced cavers have died in it. You have an open invite to come to any grotto meetings or PM me to go caving and we can get you trained on the proper techniques for neffs and once you know what you are doing and want to buy some rope, I'm sure I can get the key/permit from dale. Until then, for your own saftey(not to mention that its illegal to enter without going through the proper channels)please dont try to get into that cave. If you really want to try it some time, like I said, get ahold of me, we will get you trained and once you are prepared, we can do it.

I never once said I was going to break into the cave, I simply was interesting in hiking to the entrance as I was told it is a cool hike...

Elitist cavers... WTF??

in your previous statement, which states..

I've got the GPS coords programmed into my Garmin... we should hike up to the cave entrance to check it out... :D
This statement is not clear on whether or not you were planning on just hiking up to the cave entrance and just 'checking out' the cave entrance..OR if you were planning on hiking up to the cave entrance and 'checking out' the cave itself..meaning going in, which would therefore mean you would have to break in/bypass the gate. There was not elitist statements intended, I know as far as myself goes, there was a legitimate concern as to whether you were going to try and go into the cave or not because of the previously referenced statement. Also, as perviously showin in the thread(disproving anything elitest)there was a statement regarding saftey of the cave and FULL OUT OFFERING to give you the training for the cave and even TAKE YOU THERE once saftey concerns had been resolved...so dont take it as an elitist concern, this cave has taken lives, and we (as the national speleological society)advocate safe caving practices and are more than willing to include anyone and everyone in our 'hobby' as long as it is done safely. So, once again, if you want to PM me (like someone else that read this thread already has)about getting the training and going to the cave once properly trained (and I will arrange for a cave trip to neffs for them, once trained) I will be glad to offer that training to you and arrange for you to see the cave as well. That said, you realyl shouldnt make any more elitist remarks until you try going through the proper channels and get turned down for some dumb 'elitist' reason...saftey is not elitism. PM me Kurt, when you are ready to get some saftey training and we'll talk.

The antecedent in Kurt's quoted statement was "cave entrance".

Not that I have any background or formal education in organizational development and leadership, but as representative of your organization, your response to Kurt's interest in seeing the cave entrance was wholy inappropriate. While I respect and commend your desire to see more people become safely active in your sport, I don't see how it was necessary to villify the president of one of the most environmentally sensitive enviromental access organizations in the country as a 'trespasser' solely for his interest in seeing the entrance to this cave.

Anyways, so what is the cave like inside? Where does it come out--or do you just return the way you went in? I would love to get more involved in cave exploration one day.

I would love to one day get into it as well.

I just finished reading up a ton on this cave and it seems to me that it is not a very pretty cave, seeing as how it has minimal formations, but it is the tenth deepest cave in the united states. It sounds like it would be a blast to explore, other than some of the drops are rotted out shale making the climb out really dangerous/tedious. I wish i had more time before my mission to get trained on spelunking. Oh well another time and another day. :D

Just playing dude... ;)

I really do want to come check out one of your meetings... I know there are several other caves in the Wasatch Front that require keys as well (whats the one out North of Little Moab?)

Anyways, thanks for the heads up and I'll see you at a meeting one of these days... :D

Yeah, I don't know. It just comes out when I'm typing something that isn't conversational. I've thought about going into law--intellectual property or something, but I just don't see myself going through 3 more years of school so I can work super long hours for the next 10 years to establish myself. Work is gay. I'd rather have time than money.

I've applied to a grad program in California for Organizational Leadership. I think I can finish it in 10 months, and then come back and keep working on the training gig. We'll see. I have to stay focused on this photo thing for a bit.

well, this is neither here nor there.

Paul, so the cave isn't very beautiful in the traditional sense? I think something that primitive that so few eyes have seen would be beautiful in its own right. Whats the deal with those statues up there? I would like to check that out too one of these days.

Man I wish I had time and money for more hobbies--I still have to take up Kayaking.....

Man I must be old..
We used to wheel up Neffs all the time, (1977 thru 1981) when i had my first jeep.
That is the year that is the year they install the gate..( I think)
It was a cool place to hang out. There is a little flat right by the spring
that we called the first campground back in high school.
There is a upper and lower road on one section with the lower road
being a lot harder.. My friend rolled his jeep 2 times on 2 differnt
nights...
I live in the Holliday area and went to Skyline High School
so Neffs and Millcreek were the local hangouts when we were baging school
for the day.

Those were the good old days
