AOD: Good, Bad, Or Ugly?

Is anyone running an AOD in their rig? I have heard of some reliability issues with them, but I have also heard that the right tranny shop can beef them up pretty well. I already have the AOD, so that is why I ask. Otherwise, I will be looking for a C6.

Discuss.

Cant' speak for any 4wd AOD experience, but I beat the ABSOLUTE HELL out of one in my old E350 for about 125k, fully loaded the whole time, up and down all kinds of hills, and it never gave me a bit of trouble.

That I do not doubt.

I figure if I already have it then I don't have to find something else. I plan on shipping it to a tranny shop to get it all beefed up anyway.

The OD is great, and it held gears much better than my 700r4's.

I hate to say anything good about Fords, but that was a great transmission. It seriously got worked hard, with zero complaints.

Mine did great up to 180k miles. No problem until I needed a tow on the freeway and put the t-case in 4low instead of neutral. Didn't work so good after that. But I don't blame the tranny. The AOD was always good to me.

Ok, my AOD is pre-88 which means pile-o-crap because of bad rear oiling problems. So I'm looking at a C6 now or a 4R70W. I like the C6 reputation, but I also hear the 4R70W is dreamy too. Any thoughts on either one?

Craig at Craigs tranny repair in Kaysville told me that if Ford would have kept using the c6 that he would be out of business. I actually am putting a 460 and a c6 in the Scout this winter

really well except I need more shocks.....I just used one procomp cheapy on each side and it just isnt enough. Im thinking I will get a remote reservoir fox shock and give them a try.

I am so sad to hear this. Might as well get a j**p.

You show me a heep with a 460 in it and I will show you a smile :) Its been a tough call and a 2 year decision to swap out the IH 345. It just comes down to horsepower. I could get a 392 and put a ton of money into trying to build it and still only be about where a 460 with a cam in it would be. Im running 538 gears but I also want 42 or 44 inch tires under it eventually. I just want more go.

Why a 460? Ive never seen a scout with one in it. Ive seen a lot of 440s and hundreds of 350s and even a few 454s. I still want to be different. And I love the way a 460 sounds. Dont fret though. Right now Im thinking I will yank the Chevy drivetrain that my wifes 64 scout 80 has in it and putting My 345, TF, and dana 20 in it. It will only be running 35s.

I will miss the ol IH sound.......that is until I romp the throttle :greg:

I had a 71 IH truck with a 345...I don't have it anymore.:(
Parts are also expensive for those buggers, and hard to find sometimes.
