AOD TV cable ?'s

So ive pretty much googled my face off trying to find a simple, straight forward way to correctly adjust the TV cable on an AOD. Apparently its very subjective to the opions of the author of said instructions:rofl:. My setup is custom, 5.0 EFI V8 with an early 90's AOD installed in a 92 Explorer. I have adapted the factory explorer (A4LD trans.) TV cable to the AOD. The cable is operated with the gas pedal as opposed to the throttle body and retains full factory adjustability. My only real question is: is the main goal of adjustment to achieve equal range of movement between the throttle and TV lever with the TV cable having no slack in the idle position? Any help would be great, thanks!

The TV cable modulates line pressure in the transmission. thats why they warn about having it correctly adjusted or else you risk burning up your trans. I had to research this last winter, but now I cant really remember any of the writeups I found. It seems like on my truck the tv cable had a certain amount of "slack" and you were just supposed to adjust it so that TV cable was in the middle of its "slack" when the throttle started opening..
so to answer your question, it seems like there is supposed to be a small amount of slack in the idle position

I just installed an AOD in my EB, In tracking it down and then setting mine up I found there should be no slack and no tension. There's another tried and true and probably more accurate method and that is to install a pressure gauge and adjust it to spec. Sweet thanks, thats what I thought. Ya I already watched that video a few times, I just wanted to make sure I understood the theory since its not exactly setup like the factory. My only other question is when the butterfly on your throttle body is wide open is the TV lever on the AOD also moved as far as it can go? Just want to know so that when i get the tension on the cable right I can make sure that there is enough range of movement in the lever on the trans. Thanks! BTW glad to hear you've liked your setup, hopefully it works out good in mine too. Im pretty excited to finally get to drive the thing after over a year of work! :rofl:

You know I never checked that, I used a matching throttle cable and TV cable setup so I didn't worry about the maximum pull. One thing I did find was that the stock TV has a pretty stout spring in it to push the lever back down. My aftermarket setup didn't have a spring and it wouldn't work until I put one on it. Basically I just used a throttle return spring between the TV lever on the trans and the tcase cross member.

A couple other thoughts on this that might save you some grief. I am not sure on your style of wheeling but if you go as vertical as I do you will want to do two more things to the setup.
1st if the vent is toward the back of the case then hook a vent hose on it and run it up as high as you can on your firewall.

2nd go with the Art Carr deep pan, I had a deep sump truck pan on mine but it would suck air at the worst possible times, always when I was sitting on my spare for more than a few seconds. This pan adds 2 qts, a really heavy finned pan that is tapered off at the back to push fluid right to the pickup. I bought mine from Art Carr directly, they are happy to answer questions as well.
