Trip Report April RME Trip; MOAB!

For the April RME Trip we headed to Moab! We had a very diverse group, from a couple JKU's ( @rubi_On_Rocks , @pELYgroso ) and a new JL on 37's (Brian and his family), a couple amazing buggies on big tires (@Herzog , @Gawynz , @xjtony ) , @mbryson in his YJ/MB, @smfulle aka Grandpas Jeep in his CJ2A and I had my '48 CJ2A!

On Friday @Herzog and @Gawynz ran Pritchett, while @mbryson and I met up for a quick run up Moab Rim. I didn't get too many pics from the Moab Rim, this was my first Moab trip for the Willys and I was more concerned with how it was running & working, plus tackling a challenging trail with 31's! X-D

On the way up the Devils Crack, I got my driver-front tire wedged in the crack and couldn't move. Marc hooked up a strap and since my tire was bound up facing left (downhill, into the crack) when I popped out I had a mini-heart attack trying to steer the early CJ straight again, as it veered towards the gap. The Willys cruised right up the Z Turn, after repositioning a couple times on the biggest ledge at the bottom. We drove to the overlook, took a break and then headed back downhill. @mbryson had a wheel/tire failure, blowing the bead on his passenger-front tire and cracking the wheel, after pushing it into a ledge with much of the weight on that side of the Jeep. We ratchet strapped the suspension, then around the tire and used Marc's ARB Dual Compressor to reseat the bead. We were moving again just over 30 min later!

Coming back down, we met up with Herzog and Gawynz at the Devils Crack. They got a good laugh while I dragged the Willys down the obstacle.... it was much less exciting going down, compared to up! From there the buggies headed up the rest of the trail, Marc went into town to try getting wheels swapped and I headed to camp.

We ended up making it to the end and overlook just before Noon, and within an hour the rest of the group caught up. On the way up we had few problems, but had to take our time at several of the larger challenges. It was incredibly fun running with the small groups of 70+ year old Jeeps! The rest of the group caught up to us shortly and we all took a lunch break, enjoying the view and talking about the surrounding trails that you can see from the high point.

Marc found some old pictographs close to the trail that we all checked out...

On Sunday we had a smaller group, running the Pickle! It's been years since I've been on this trail and last time, I was in my old TJ with 104" WB on 40's with a V8 and Auto.... this time I'm in a carburated CJ2a with an 80" wheelbase and manual transmission! X-D Herzog, Gawynz, MBryson and XJTony were a bit more prepared for the trail. ;)

Shane let his son drive the last bit of the trail and he did great!

Jeff got a picture of my wheelstand incident.... the photo makes it look like NOTHING.... but it felt real bad from the drivers seat. I thought I was going over for about 2 seconds! Wheeling with a 80" wheelbase, limited wheel travel and a rear locker can make for some pretty interesting moments!

I've got to say thanks to everyone for the patience, spotting, rock stacking, yank with the strap, etc. It was quite the experience wheeling the small, old Willys and took more effort than my usual 4x4 and there were a few times that it was pretty exciting. So thanks to everyone that helped me out over the weekend! :D
