ARB problems?

Went winter wheeling a few weeks ago, I have an ARB Locker in the rear (Ford 9"), was at Waynes World coming out when I turned the locker on and the compressor just kept running, I checked the air line and no leaks but the locker wasn't engaged so I flipped off and went on my way, 5 minutes later I turned it back on and it worked just fine.

WTF, any one else have this problem?

I'm taking it in to have it looked at but just curious if any one has had this problem and what the fix was, it has done this a time or two in the past.

Sometimes the air tanks get rattled loose on the compressor themselves and have to be tightened down again. Or maybe something with a solenoid? If the air line is fine those would be my guesses.

It could also be the seal (one of the seals...) inside the differential, or inside the ARB iteslf. Have fun! Yes, i've seen it happen many (many) times.

Yeah, I've seen that too. If that is the case then you will have to remove the carrier to get a new seal put in. Usually the two o-rings the actually slide over the end of the carrier where the bearings press on and feed the air from the copper tubing. I always try to check the easiest things first and hope I get lucky.

Thats why I would check the things not inside the diff first because they are easier to check. If they all check out then its probably time to change the o-rings.

How long have you been running that ARB? Even when its not engaged, those o-rings are still getting wear and tear, so they will wear out eventually just from driving.

check all the fittings and silenoid for any possible leaks then if all else fails, replace your O rings...never hurts to have new o rings right? :p

Also, sometimes when you are leaking air inside the diff, you will be able to either hear air coming out of your breather or else gear oil will be coming out of it.

mine used to do this when i had them in the front. mostly when the axel was on a bind. I think it could have been possibly pushing the o-ring out somewhat while on a bind.

Gear oil has been coming out of the breather so i'm sure its the O rings. It has only been in the axle for 10 months, been wheeling a hand full of times and it was driven occasionally on the road. I would think after spending so much on a locker it would at least last longer than 10-11 months. . .

10 months is definately pre-mature failure... I would call the installer and see if they are willing to warranty the issue. I've only had one leak out of the hundereds I've dealt with, we had to tear into his axle twice but in the end he's a happy customer :D

Yep, having six states check it out, whom installed it back in May of 07, hopefully its something simple. I also have the ARB for the front to be installed. Does anyone around town or six states have the o-ring's in stock? I'd hate to have to wait a week or 2 just to get the o-rings.

I've had my ARBs in since 2001; had quite a few issues over the years. latest one was the compressor would not turn on. After troubleshooting everything i found it was a defective solinoid and six states to the rescue.
i've also had the rear axle lock and refuse to unlock; fixed it by pulling the air line out of the axle to let off pressure. this fixed itself after a few times.
once i had the air line melt, even though i ran it thru the frame. replaced the air line, issues fixed.
i've also had issues where the compressor would run and run and run.

your issue is a mystery to me, as to why it would not lock right away. i suspect it didn't push enough pressure to the axle.

the only thing i know about ARBs for sure is that 1. ignore the problem until it keeps doing it at least 50 times because it'll probably fix itself and 2. i wish i'd gotten detroits

Dont get me wrong, I love the ARB, I have had my rig into 6 states for the past 4 days and finally I get them to beleive me there was something wrong, they tore the 3rd member out and as we speak they are replacing the orings as well as the clips. I was hoping they would be done sooner as I want to go wheeling on Sunday but we'll see whats up.
