ARB ?

My rear air locker is sometimes had to get to engage all the time. Sometimes when I first engage the locker the air compessor will cycle a lot. After I switch it on a couple of times it seems to be fully engaged because the air compressor quits cycling every ten seconds. What inside that diff causes this?

I'm here. I click on all the ARB trouble threads, even though they're sometimes hard to keep up with.

:p

I've even more staunch 'its all about install' guy these days. My installer (whom shall remain anonymous -_-) has done dozens and dozens of these in the past year for my customers. Knock on wood, zero issues, thats zero with a 0 :D

OK I did take that back, I had to move a customers ABS line an inch because it was close to the fitting. A few minutes well spent.

Back to the D44, I know nothing about them so I'll leave my logic at the door. That said the air supply designs are similar to all ARB's and can be troubleshot accordingly.

Verify the leak is at your diff and not along the lines from the compressor to the diff. From there your only option is to start working over the differential.

Put some dish soap and water in a spray bottle and spray all the fittings from the pump to the diff. This will bubble when you find the leak. If you don't find it then you'll need to open the diff. Like Kurt said, it's more than likely the o ring inside. You'll need to drop the carrier and pull the locker apart. It sounds worse than it is. Hopefully they did a good job installing it to begin with.

Despite what Braden says, I love ARBs and have never had a problem with them once correctly installed.

Check the solenoid. What your describing sounds like a leaky solenoid to me. If you have front/rear ARB's, simply swap air lines.

For it to be O rings or etc, I would think it would always leak. The solenoid is the only part in the entire setup that is mechanical. Everything else is pnuematic with a seal.

...and if it is the solenoid (apparently a common problem), how does that have anything to do with poor installation?

I have heard that most problems with the arb stem from install or contamiation in the diff fluid. I didnt think about the solonoid being the problem make sense though. I can't complain though I was pretty much paid to run arb's front and rear

I wouldn't say common... I've had mine for almost 4 years and one gives me problems occasionaly. Like the OP said, it's hit and miss and if it's acting up, flip the switch again. And like Carl said, if it's a problem, take it apart and clean it. It's no big deal. ;)

Far from common, I've never had to replace a failed one nor had a customers fail. Most the ones I've sold are for guys building their own air system or installing a used locker that came sans solenoid.

I am having problems with my front arb its in a dana 44 as well. Mine cycles a bunch when I first kick it on to but mine isnt locking up. I changed the solenoid but still having problems. Im going to try the soap and water thing tomorrow. If its in the diff I may have someone else tear it apart for me anyone know any shops that are good with arbs.

Probably the same one that installed this:

Or this:

If it helps, I have a pressure tester we can use to verify your air locker is/isn't leaking inside of the differential. We used it just last week for an RME'ers 8" ARB (sorry can't remember your username) and were able to fix a couple of installer errors :p
