What's your opinion? I have stumbled upon a Chev one ton truck with a front 60 and 14 bolt rear. Would these axles just be too big for the Willys. I have lengthened the wheelbase, but it's still gonna be under 90". I already have the H1 wheels and tires, so that is not an issue. I also already have a set of 3/4 ton axles -front D44 and rear D60 to put in it. So whaddayuh think???

what size tire? If you are running 36" or smaller then I say skip the one tons...37" or bigger and you're good to go. Or buy them if they are a really good deal and turn a protfit. ;)

36" 's on tap right now. I'm buying them either way. Just wondered if they were too big for this rig. I like the idea of almost never having to worry about the u-joints.

Gonna narrow the axles? What drivetrain in the Willys? (is the centered axle a good thing or bad?)

D60 Ujoints are way-cool.....just don't leave them full-width under such a little rig. :)

Pretty miuch what Carl said, if you narrow them it wont be as bad...but fact of the matter is a D60 and especially a 14 bolt diffs are HUGE, with only 36s you will be getting hung up on them often. If you narrow them then it wont be nearly as bad, but in stock form, IMO, they will suck ;)

No they won't be full width. 5" off of each + H1 wheels will give it width of about 68" outside to outside of tires. 5" off the pass side should keep the D18 lined up nicely.

Also the 14 ff would not go in without a major flat bottom job.

The pic in my avatar is w/stock axles and 10" wheels. The outside to outside measure is about 64".

If you dont put one ton's in now you WILL later, so save your self the time and money and do it now. I broke my 44 every time I went out with 35's. I hate fixin stuff on the trail when I could be wheelin. I've wheeled with you guy's and I know you like the skinny pedal, you need the 60-14bolt combo :D

Well, I been doing my homework. Cool fact that might swing this into a done deal. 14ff have two different shaft lengths. 37+5/8" and one 31+5/8" some. If you cut 7" off of the pass side, you can run same shafts on both sides and end up with offset rear that is about 61" WMS!

Transfer case doesn't line up perfect, but the angle shouldn't be too bad. :D

Spare shafts would be plentiful too!

the math shows me you would only need to take 6" off

oh and if you take that much off just the passenger side, how will it affect where you will mount the spring perch?

That's a good point. I'll have to get out a tape. I don't have the 14 bolt in my possession yet, but that diff section is wide.

I think it'll be fine. I'd be glad to take a few measurements for you though.

Thanks, but I probably won't be able to do much with it until I get back from Moab next week.
Are you shaving your diff? How far are you going??

I just took the lip off the bottom and cut the cover to match. I've even still got all my bolts in the cover. (which is kinda unusual for a shaved 14 bolt) I've got a picture around comparing my 35" MT/Rs and D44 in my XJ vs. the 315 BFG AT's and my shaved 14 bolt. The 14 bolt is lower, but only by about 3/8".
